"Alright, roll the dice, Shep!" Rhett said to his youngest kid. Rhett had just taken his turn. The whole family was sitting around the coffee table, playing a board game. Barbara, the family's dog, was laying beside Rhett's foot. Shepard rolled the dice and took his turn. All he needed was three moves, and he'd win the game. He rolled a one. "Awww, man!" He exclaimed.Locke took his turn. He rolled a five, and he needed a seven to win. Jessie took her turn. She won easily. She rolled a four and she only needed two to win. "Oh yeah!!!" She shouted. "Good job, mom!" Rhett said. It had been a fun Monday night. As the clock's hands kept moving, it kept getting later and later. Jessie glanced her phone to see the time. It was 10:30 pm on a Monday night. "Alright, go brush your teeth and hop in bed. You have school tomorrow.", Jessie said to the kids, smiling. They ran off. "I love you guys!" Rhett shouted as they ran up the stairs. They ran back down and briskly hugged him and Jessie. They ran back up and shut the door.
Rhett and Jessie stayed up for a couple more hours, watching the first disc of Lord of the Rings. Jessie looked over at Rhett. She smiled, and he put his arm around her shoulder. "This was fun. We haven't done it in a while. I really think the kids enjoyed it." Jessie smiled. Rhett gave a big dorky grin right back to her. "I love you", Rhett said. "Yeah, I feel the same way about you", Jessie chuckled. Her expression quickly changed from joyful to solemn, like a small, grey cloud on a once perfect, summer's day.
Rhett furrowed his brow. "What's wrong?" She looked down with sad eyes and sighed. "How long are we going to keep doing this?" She asked with dread. Rhett titled his head. "Doing what?". "Spending time together. You know... like laughing with the kids and... and smiling together." She mumbled. Rhett smiled. "We're together 'til the day one of us dies. And when we get to Heaven we can smile together even more." He said with his soothing, calm voice. Jessie warmly grinned, reassured that everything was going to be fine.
"Well, Hun. It's about time we get to sleep." She patted him on the back and kissed him on his cheek.
They prepared for bed and hopped in the bed together. "Well, Jessie McLaughlin. I love you very much." He smiled at her. She tilted her head as she looked at him with a quirky smile. "And Rhett James McLaughlin, I feel the exact same way about you", she chuckled. Rhett turned the lights out. "G'night", he said.
Those were the last words that were said until Jessie woke up the next morning. The lights were still off, and light was pouring through the window. Rhett was gone.
"R-rhett?".
