THE OLD FARM truck was silent but shook every couple seconds as we drove down the bumpy dirt path, into another small town. The fifth one this week. Homes that once stood tall and beautiful, were now burned and destroyed from the apocalypse, not even the sun gave the houses a second glance as they all stood in total darkness. Not only that, but the silence in the truck was almost eerie, but somewhat peaceful. Mainly because nobody was fighting, like we normally do 24/7. Yet soon we were bound to fight once again as Mira's annoying voice broke the peacefulness of the silent truck.
"Can we pull over?"
There was an awkward silence, until Rae's pitiful sigh of annoyance filled up the gaps.
"Look where we are sis, we can't just pull over." Rae says sternly, acting like the older sibling.
"I haven't seen any feral's for a couple miles now." Mira argues.
"Yeah, a couple miles!"
"I'll be quick!"
"What do you need to even do?" I snap.
"I, uh... well, you know. Nature calls."
"Mira," I roll my eyes, along with Rae "Even Poppy knew to go last night before we left.
"Alaska, although you didn't live with me willingly, I am still your mother. You have no right to speak to me like that" Mira warns "And for god sake's stop calling me by my name! I'm your mother!"
This is so stupid, It's the apocalypse. She can't just ground me, if that's what she thinks. You know there is no point even arguing back. Snapping my hand back through the empty space between the seat, waving off her comment with a grunt, I return my gaze back to the front window. In the distance, the tall buildings of New York can soon be seen, not only that but, one moving black van was going at a fast pace up the hill entering the city. Must be Liam's group. The radio soon started to prickle to life as Rae picked it up and walkies Liam's group.
"We're 30 minutes out, Over" Rae said sternly as she tied her hair up in a loose pony tail, using her knees to hold the steering wheel in place.
"We copy, we just entered the city, clear of feral's for now but that might change, Over" Liam said.
"Tell me if we're going to slow" she pauses "Don't get lost, Over and out"
"Copy, Over and out"
Rae slowly puts the walkie in its holder, clipping it to the dash of the rusty truck, as she continued to drive ahead, adding more speed to the engine. We were going about 90 km per hour, on a small street that before the apocalypse, would've been 30 or 40. The car went back to being silent, well, besides Marks loud snoring. Why couldn't he have gone with the others?Slumping back in my chair I look out the window. The once beautiful world was nothing but burnt down buildings from the bombs. The government thinks that with the world going to shit, it would be a great idea to send the nukes down. If this ever gets resolved, I'm going to remind myself to never go into politics.
"You should slowdown, we could get into a car accident" Mira said bluntly.
"And who's fault will that be?" Rae asked.
"Yours"
"No, because you will be the one distracting the only decent driver here!"
"I'm just saying, we should be safer than this!"
"Oh, my lord, SHUT UP!"
Mark soon woke up from the girls fighting and was not pleased with Rae for acting out. He can't tell her what to do. He's not her father, hell he's mine yet I don't even call neither of them mom and dad, their just Mark and Mira to me, and they always will be.
