LILITH AND HER soldiers guided us to the entrance of the camp, where there had been a couple of small buildings. When we had been approaching the camp it had appeared to only have tents, maybe we came from the back? As we walked closer to the first building, the sign came into reach. It had been a bit hard to read because of the big blotchy letters, and it was definitely clear that they must have stolen letters off of a great variety of different signs, yet they made it work. The sign on the first building read "MëdīÇał čEnTėR".
"Alright, stop here" Lilith commanded, as two men with white long doctor's coats emerged from the front door, of the building.
"This is doctor Ludwick and doctor Visser, they will be taking your blood work today" She said, with a pause then continued, "Don't be alarmed, it's just a little procedure we go through with our new comers. We just want to make sure that none of you, are infected and that it's safe for you to join our community"
"Community? How many people do you have?" Mark questioned.
"Well according to this month's results, we have a striving community of at least 60 people" Dr. Visser replied, driving his fingers through his brunette hair pulling it back.
60 people! I stood there frozen and in shock, while Liam and Rae applauded them, along with asking questions, most of which were "How did you find that much survivors?" Or "How did you make it this far?"and with Rae's last question which was "Hasn't the amount of people you have, drawn any unwanted attention?". If you think about it, the way we sounded so shocked seems kind of sad in away. If I were them and being asked those questions, I would have felt bad for them. Some of the others in my group joined in on the conversation but I just wanted to get my blood done and over with, so I could just settle in. So, I stood there awkwardly in the back ease dropping in on the conversation while trying to hold Poppy in my arms, as her body rested along my chest. Her arm fell over on one of mine and the other was tucked closed to her chest, as her sleeping head laid across my shoulder, her long dirty hair running down her back across my arms. I could feel her tiny chest moving up and down, as her deep breaths blew against my shoulder. Kissing her head and stroking her back we stood there. In the moment it was peaceful and again the thoughts of what life would've been like if it was just me and Poppy on the road alone filled my brain.
"Earth to Alaska?"
"Huh?" I said turning to my right "Oh hey Tatters"
He slowly shuffled towards me, with a big smile threatening to take over his face. He sometimes is a complete dork I swear, but.... thank god that with everything that has gone down in this world, it still hasn't changed him. I'd be lost without a smile like his. Once at my side his hand moves to my back, gently rubbing in circular motions. I turn in response, shifting closer to him as Poppy's head turns to face the other way as she lets out a huff, and with sleepy heavy eyes she falls back to sleep. Tatum smiles placing a light kiss on Poppy's head until looking back up at me with a grin. That smile. I can't explain it but it sends goosebumps up my back as my throats begins to swell up, and all I want to do is fall into his strong arms and stay there peacefully... forever. As I thought about this I realized that he was staring right at me, the tension building up between us. From afar it probably looked like we were one happy family, but that's the problem we're not a family, Tatum is not her father... even though sometimes I wish he was. Lost in this moment we are soon brought out of it as the group begins to move, slowly walking into the building.
"You should get in there, I'll meet you when you're done" he said, removing his hand from my back and turning away.
I quickly rushed to catch up. Soon I reach the door where Rae gives me a sly face. Giving her a quick nudge with my elbow we walk into the building. The halls had cheap medical beds along with a couple of people who looked like medical personnel's, along with some who definitely were patients... let's just say it wasn't hard to tell. For a building that looked small it appeared to be big, as the halls felt very spacious and welcoming, the floors were also pretty well in its maintenance as they were a shiny peach color, along with walls that had half wooden paneling with the color peach on top.
