Chapter 9

"Maasi! Please, please stop her! I don't want to go!" Aaditya's screams rang in my ears and I whipped my head towards the old woman who was dragging him away.

"Leave him or I swear there will be hell to pay for." I snarled.

She just smirked at me and motioned her driver towards Aaditya. He picked Aaditya's screaming body up and carried him towards the car.

"Maasi, please. They are taking him away." Amara sobbed. "Stop her maasi."

I rushed forward and before the driver could push Aaditya into the car, I grabbed his shoulder from behind and gave it a hard tug. As the driver’s hold loosened on Aaditya, I snatched him and placed him behind me where he wrapped his tiny arms around my thighs and pushed his face in my legs, hiding himself.

“You cannot take him away from me.” I growled at the woman. “I have the sole custody of them.”

“Don’t force me to drag this to court.” Her eyes lashed fire as she threatened me.

I smirked. “Are you actually telling me that you think you will win against Sakshit, Rahul and Manyata.” A fierce look came over my face. “They will fight for me.”

“Excellent!” She clapped her hands dramatically. “Tell me what pleasure do you get from separating a mother from her children?”

“Mehr gave the sole custody of the two kids in her will to me.” I paused. “And so did Siddhanth.”

Ramya Singhania’s eyes flashed fire and she bared her teeth at me. “You have no right,” she snarled and started walking towards me. “No right at all to keep my grandson away from me.”

A phone rang somewhere in the office and the sound of it broke the silence in the room. I was sitting in Davis’s office and had just finished explaining everything to him.

“Rash?” he asked in a choked voice. “Now, it’s Rash?” He pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger. “Can you give me a definite name and tell me who’s the culprit?”

“If I knew, wouldn’t I have gone and told the D.A as soon as I could and get started with the vacation for which I had applied and you postponed until after this case?” I pointed out to him. “What’s wrong? Why are you so angry?”

“I am angry because I told the Mayor that we have a very strong lead.”

Mike and I stared at him shocked.

“Why would you do that?” Mike asked.

“He was pestering me for a long time, so when you came to me in the morning and told me that you have the evidence to nail Cross, I made a call to the Mayor’s office so that he shuts up and goes about his work.”

There was a pregnant pause where we just looked at each other.

“We’re screwed.” Mike muttered under his breath but all of us could hear it.

“On the contrary,” an irritating yet oddly familiar voice, smug voice said. “Now that I am a permanent member of this team, I think we can salvage almost any situation.”

“What the fuck are you doing here?” I looked at Lucas, sitting straight on my chair, and spat at him.

“Why, I came here to assist you, of course.”
