Darren was dancing reluctantly with Lily when he keep on glancing Emily's way . The woman was oblivious to the fact that he wasn't interested in dancing with her as she keep on doing the incessant talking. He felt like he wanted to just walked away leaving Lily alone but he knew Emily wouldn't allow that. She would probably drag him back to her.

Several moments later, he saw someone approaching her and she smiled at him. Even just by looking her smile at the man, he can't stop his rage and wanted to just run to her side. That man may be not a fine specimen but the way she talked to him, smiled at him set his temper boiling.

Then later when they danced and twirled around he can't stop looking at her. She looked so amazing with her curvy body that was last time hidden by her baggy dress. Even though the woman he was currently dancing look beautiful, but her eagerness in wanting to court him make him wanted to throw up. The other sister was busying herself with the other gentlemen while waiting for him to finish dancing with her elder sister.

He can't control his feelings anymore. Hastily, he removed himself from Lily and marched up to them. They didn't realise he was coming until he punch the man hard enough for him to fell unconscious on the floor. Darren doesn't want her to walk away from him and so he did what he knew he would regret later. He quickly grabbed her hand but she yanked his hand away and make her way to the plumpy man.

"Ban! Ban! Wake up please." Emily cried. She even tried to slap his face several times and only got up seconds later. "Oh god thank god you're alive!" She smile in relief. Emily put her forearm at the back of his neck and held him up gently. She look so concerned over her friend that made Darren became even more jealous of that man.

"I think I broke my nose." He raised his hands and touched the injury. Bancroft shook his head to have a clearer vision. "Don't worry about me Em, I'll be alright later." He smiled while getting up unsteadily and dusting his breeches.

"Are you sure? Do you need me to follow you to the nearest chair? You have a few bruises on your face." She stated still feeling troubled over the matter while most of the bystanders slowly dispersed from the scene. It was lucky that he is fleshy on the face too so there wasn't any blood flowing out. Darren still stood there looking indifferent.

"No, I'm fine and I think you better get back to that man there." He whispered shakily. Although Bancroft is a big sized man but he is as timid as a mouse when it comes to a fight ever since young. Slowly, he removed himself from Emily and left them there. Emily wanted to follow him but her movement was twarted by Darren. "Follow me."

"Why should I after what you did today?" She spoke softly while glaring hotly at him and walk passed him but Darren quickly pulled her back to him. "I'm sorry Emily, I will not do that again. I didn't know he was your friend and quickly assumed he was a lecher trying to seduce you." He said with a hint of remorse.

Emily sighed, finally understood his rough behaviour just now. He just wanted her to be safe as he care for her like a friend would do, but she does felt a little touched by his action. "Fine, I guess it would be better if we head back home early." They left after wishing her father good bye and walked towards the carriage with Gerard waiting for them.

Upon reaching home, Emily head straight to the chamber without saying a word after the incident. She felt worn out and wanted nothing but a rest. She felt a slight headache. Her chamber was cold and dark so she hurriedly lit up the fireplace to warm up the room. She wore her thick night robe to prevent herself from shivering. Emily have to drag herself to the bed as she felt the cold weather was freezing her feet.

Slowly, she covered herself with the brown blanket and became dead to the world.

Darren knew at this moment she would be sleeping and without giving much thoughts for it, he slipped into her chamber. He knew she was really tired and blame himself for not being considerate or even sharp enough to refuse dancing with two unknown strangers. Though she didn't mind him dancing with them but he actually felt uncomfortable for the first time. Last time, he would dance with anyone he fancies without a care whether the previous woman he was with would be angry or not, but now he felt scare he would lose Emily's little trust towards him that was slowly building up.
