Chapter Three
*~*~*~*
It was almost noon when I found my way back outside the ship to get some fresh air. It hadn't taken long for me to get sick of being stuck in my small windowless room. The room itself felt like a cage to me and I had to get out of it. The sun was shining bright down on the deck of the hellicarrier as I spotted two jets landing. From one of them a woman with short red hair stepped off along with a man in dark pants and a purple shirt, he had dark drown hair that had tints of gray in it. The man seemed nervous to be here, and I found myself wondering if he'd been dragged here against his will. Off the other jet I recognized Phil who was smiling and talking to a tall muscular man with nicely styled blonde hair.
I decided to ignore the four of them and walked over to the edge of the ship where I sat down with my legs hanging over the side. I closed my eyes, just thinking about what I'd do once Loki was defeated and I was free from here. I didn't know whether or not I should go to the school that Phil had mentioned or not. It'd be nice to be around people like me, but if SHIELD knew about it then I wouldn't be as free from them as Phil had promised.
"It's probably not to smart to have your feet hanging off the side like that, ma'am." A man's voice spoke up from behind me. I tensed and quickly turned to see that it was the blonde man that'd been with Phil behind me, along with the man that'd been with the red headed woman.
"I'll take my chances." I blew off the man's words and looked down at the water below the ship, finding myself tempted to jump in and swim away.
"You three might want to step inside! It's about to get hard to breathe out here!" A woman called out to us in warning. The men only ignored her words, instead walking over to stand on either side of me, looking down at the water themselves.
"Is it a submarine?" The blonde asked no one in particular.
"Yeah, they want me in a pressurized metal container-" The other man laughed at the blonde's suggestion. He was cut off though by the ship moving suddenly and starting to rise out if the water. "No, this is much worse."
I got up to my feet without a word and headed inside the hellicarrier where the red headed woman from before was standing with the door open. I just walked past her and started heading back to my room until I felt a hand on my shoulder, making me tense. Not a second later the hand pulled away from me as though I'd burnt it, it was quite possible that I had. I turned on my heel to see Phil behind me, clutching his sore hand.
"Sorry," I quickly apologized as I took his red hand, causing him to wince at my touch. I blew on it softly, watching as the redness faded back to a slight pink, as though nothing had happened.
"Thanks, I should have known better than to just grab you like that." He waved off my apology as I released his hand. "Director Fury would like to meet with everyone now."
"Okay," I shrugged before following him through the maze of hallways until we reached a large room. When we got there I saw the blonde man from before handing a man with an eyepatch a ten dollar bill as he looked around the room in amazement. The room was nice with dozens of people sitting around at computers on the level below us and a large table with chairs around it. The red head from the door sat at the table with a laptop, her lips pressed into a thin line with her brows furrowed. When Phil and I walked in the man with the eyepatch immediately looked in my direction, his one eye seeming to narrow at me.
"Glad you could join us, Miss Falconeri." Eyepatch man greeted me, but his tone didn't match with his words. He seemed to be on edge, as though he was frightened by my presence, something that I couldn't help but feel slightly proud of.
"Didn't really have a choice." I muttered under my breath as I sat at the table and stared out of the large window at the front of the room, watching the clouds the surrounded the large hellicarrier.
"You and Dr. Banner will be in the wind as soon as the tesseract in recovered." Eyepatch assured me, causing the man in purple to glance my way. It was only then that I recognized him as Bruce Banner from all the papers and articles I'd read over the years.
"Speaking of which, where are you on that?" Bruce asked them. I only rolled my eyes as I turned my attention back to the clouds, having no real interest in their conversation.
"Agent Romanoff, why don't you show Dr. Banner to the lab?" Eyepatch suggested after a few minutes, his words catching my attention once again.
"Come on Doctor, we have all the toys." The red head smiled as Bruce followed her out of the large room. I recognized the woman's name from my conversation with Phil, she was one of the SHIELD agents, Natasha Romanoff. I glanced around the room to see that it was only Eyepatch, Blondie, Phil, a brunette woman, and myself left in the area now, a majority of them looking at me as though I were an animal.
"Rogers, Agent Hill will show you to your room so you can get situated." Eyepatch told Blondie, making him the super soldier Steve Rogers that Phil had mentioned. Steve followed the brunette, Agent Hill, out of the room without a word, leaving me alone with Phil and Eyepatch.
"Is there a reason you're watching me like I'm an animal?" I raised a brow as I rested my feet up on the table.
"Vero-" Eyepatch began, but I was quick to cut him off.
"My name is Nichole. Call me Nicole or call me nothing." I kept my voice flat but firm as I spoke, leaving no room for argument. "Why don't we just start with what you guys know about me and go from there?"
"You were orphaned at the age of eight and then disappeared from the hospital." Eyepatch spoke as if he were reading off a paper in front of him. "You were then presumed dead until three years ago when you appeared at that diner in Marion, Ohio."
"What makes you believe that I belong here?" I gave a fake yawn out of boredom. I could see his good eye twitch slightly at my actions, no doubt annoyed with me.
"Shortly after you turned eight years old there was an incident at your school where your teacher's desk caught fire without any warning." Phil answered for Eyepatch. I couldn't help but smile at the memory of that day. The teacher had gotten a little too irritating for my taste and her desk was wood and covered in paper. It wasn't my fault that she didn't know both of those were fire hazards.
"If that's all then I think I'll return to my room." I stretched my arms as I stood up and gave them a fake smile. "Good day Phil, Eyepatch."
