AVENGERS COMPOUND: NEW YORK

TWO YEARS BEFORE INFINITY WAR

"Why didn't you tell me? I could have gone to Germany, I could have helped. I could have prevented this." Despite Rhodes' insistence that there was nothing Valeria could have done to prevent his accident, she still felt hurt they didn't tell her anything about the battle. Deep down, Valeria couldn't blame Tony and Rhodes. She knew she wasn't ready to go on an all out battle yet, especially against the ones who had been helping her train. Her powers still took over at times, although training has helped her control them. But as she only felt Vision's presence in the compound, no one else, she wondered if her training would even continue.

Tony had feared for Valeria's reaction to when she saw the condition of Rhodey, unknowingly to him she had felt something had gone terribly wrong. He remembers Rhodes trying to explain this ability of hers to him a couple months ago, something in the lines of her force sense, being able to feel another being's feelings, the future, and impending danger. In the kind of world they live in, Tony wishes she didn't possess such power, sometimes it would only be more harmful for her than helpful. "You would have only gotten hurt, kid. There would probably be no airport left if you and Wanda clashed. Plus, I already had another 15 year old to look after."

"You had another what? Who are they? I feel betrayed." Valeria watched Tony's facial expression scrunch up, realizing he had let it slip that there was another teenager he'd have to look after. One he feared Val knew, at least from appearance. When Tony and Rhodes convinced Uncle Manny to enroll the girl into Midtown High, it was all in efforts to give her the best resources to educate herself and make friends. Although they hadn't yet succeeded in the friends department, Tony was content with knowing Valeria was one of the brightest students there, coming a close second to a boy named Peter Parker. Val never spoke about anyone she went to school with but she did always thank them for enrolling her there, the last thing Tony wanted to do was ruin a place where she was just Valeria Amaya: the student. "You could just look into my mind for the answer, Jadi."

"I don't read people's minds without their permission," Valeria shot Tony a playful glare, watching him sit down in his desk with the package that had just been delivered to him. "And it's Jedi, I've told you like 20 times now. You've also promised to watch at least one film from the franchise, Uncle Manny is tired of me making him watch Empire Strikes Back every Friday night. Harry watched A New Hope with me once but he fell asleep. Uncle Manny says I should make more friends." Tony's eyes shot up to Val, who began to clean her dirty glass lenses. He vaguely recalls Peter mentioning the same movie during the battle, which had helped them take down the tiny-then-giant man that Steve had recruited. An idea sparked in his head seconds later, not knowing how smart it'd be but he was tired of seeing Valeria have a conversation with people her age.
