Chapter 31
I open my eyes to the bright daylight outside. The birds sing their song, echoing through the trees. I throw a pillow at the window.
“Shut up birds!” I shout, getting up. I stomp out of the room. I make my way down to the kitchen to find Jarrod and Talia making omelets and laughing together. I try not to look at them.
“Hi Callie.” Jarrod says, taking his attention to me.
“Hey Jarrod.” I say grabbing some bread for toast. I plop it in the toaster and lean on the counter, arms crossed.
“Where are the guys?” Talia asks, flipping an omelet.
“They had to go finish their tour, so they left late last night.” I sigh. My toast pops up. I grab it and run up to the guest room. I lay down on the bed. I pull out my cellphone. I don’t care what time it is in wherever the guys are.
“Callie?” Harry’s voice comes through the phone.
“Harry.” I say. I picture him, sitting there on the plane. Liam and Louis fighting, Zayn sleeping, Niall playing angry birds and shouting ‘Why are these birds so oddly misshapen?’ I smile and take a bite of toast.
“What are you doing?” He asks.
“Eating toast. What about you?”
“Did I hear toast? Niall’s voice comes over the phone.
“I said toast. How did you know?” I say laughing.
“I’m hungry.” Complains Harry.
“Wish you had my mad cooking skill now, don’t you?” I ask.
“Yes…” He mutters sadly.
“Well I just wanted to tell you I missed you.” I say.
“I miss you too.” He says. “I have to go, seeya.” He says.
“Bye Harry.” I say and hang up the phone. I get up off the bed and go over to the chest of drawers. If I’m right, I’ll still have some clothes in here. At one point I was determined to make this my room, but my mom would never let me. I slept in here and treated it as my room anyway. I pull open the drawer and sure enough, that’s where my aero jeans went. I take off the ones I’m wearing and throw them on the floor. I remove my shirt and pull on the pink cardigan that’s sitting there. I slowly make my way to the bathroom and straighten my hair and fix my makeup. When I walk down the stairs again, my mom, Daniel and Jarrod are all sitting in the living room. I plop down on the couch to see what Jarrod is watching. The news. Boring.
“Good morning Cal.” My mom says without looking up from her newspaper.
“Morning.” I reply.
“Ready to go?” She asks looking up.
“Where?” I ask, suddenly confused.
“To get your dress!” She exclaims. I shoot her a ‘I don’t know what the heck you’re talking about’ look. “For the wedding!” She says.
“Oh, yeah.” I say. The wedding I completely forgot! “What’s the date today?” I ask.
“Honestly Callie, it’s January 30.” She says getting up. I get up also and follow her to the door. I hop in her SUV and we drive off down the road. We stop at the mall and get out.
“I have the order placed at MACY’s but you just have to try it on.” She says, leading the way through the doors. She leads me to the desk and starts talking to the man behind it. That’s when I tune out. The rack of clothes behind me moves. I turn around just as a head of almost black hair disappears around the corner.
“Zayn?” I run after it but it’s gone. What would Zayn be doing in Colorado? Nothing. I’m just paranoid with Harry leaving. “Zayn!” I call one last time. Nothing appears out of the piles of clothes. Paranoid. I make my way back to my mom who is now holding a baby blue dress.
“For you.” She says, handing it to me. I walk briskly towards the dressing rooms and into one of them. I slip off my clothes and let the dress fall onto me. I zip it up and it looks gorgeous.
“I love it.” I say, stepping out to where my mom is waiting.
“You look beautiful Cal.” She says, admiring me. I smile. It hugs my chest and then at the waistline, falls into a ball gown style and cuts off just above my knees.
“Let’s go then.” She says and we walk out of the store.
