Chapter 1

“You’re crazy.” Barron shook his head at me. “No way. You can stay here. I’ll only be gone a few weeks, a month at the most.”

“Come on. Please? Just for a little while then I’ll come right back home and you can continue with whatever it is you were planning on doing in the first place.” My brother usually left me all by myself while he went off to do rogue business.

“No, Lucy.” He frowned. “It’s too dangerous for you to be around them. They can easily hurt you without even meaning to. “

I crossed my arms and turned my back to him. It was normal for him to leave but this was only his third day home, and we were in a new town. He had explained about the area pretty well on the car ride here.

Our parents lived about three states away. They were not very happy when Barron and I first decided to move out three years ago. Even though we were adopted, they loved us as if we were their own.

Barron first shifted into his white wolf when he was thirteen; I was only seven at the time. After a few years Barron began to search for others like himself. He found a few and they explained about his wolf. There were thirteen packs in the US, and if you didn’t belong to a pack, then you were a rogue. If you got too close to pack boundaries, they would kill you. So, for safety reasons, we always stayed at least a mile out.

The pack we were closest to at the moment was the Silver Shadows pack, a pack known for its hostility and cruel nature.

“Can I at least know where you are going?” I brushed my brown-red hair out of my face and pulled it into a tight bun on top of my head.

“If you must know, I am just going one city over to meet with some rogues. They contacted me when we crossed into this state about a job and I agreed to at least hear them out.” He placed his hands on my shoulders and brought me into his arms for a bear hug. “I love you. I’ll see you soon. If you need anything I’m a call away.”

“Yeah, whatever, I love you too. I am sixteen, you know, I can handle myself.” I felt like a little kid, but at the moment I really wanted to go with him and I knew my time was running out.

He kissed the top of my head and smiled. “Prove it.” Then he was gone. He waved as he walked out the door and to his car.

I groaned as I switched on the television and made myself comfortable with a bag of Jumbo Ruffles and onion dip. Honestly, it’s amazing that I’m not fat.

I went to bed early that night and awoke to find I had slept most of the day away. By the time I was dressed, fed, and had checked my phone, I realized I had three missed calls and seven text from Barron. I dialed his number and called him back. He answered on the first ring.

“Where have you been? I’ve called and texted. Why haven’t you answered?” He sounded panicked at first, but as he continued to take deep breathes, he seemed to relax.
