Chapter 5

When I woke up Hale was gone. I walked downstairs to an empty house and wondered why everything was so quiet. It wasn’t like Hale to leave me by myself.

I made bacon and munched on it while I went to look through the house to see if I really was by myself. I decided to check the gym, which was empty, then the arcade.

Barron and Lucas had their eyes glued to the television. I walked to the game console and paused their game.

“Lucy!” Barron exclaimed while Lucas yelled, “Really!”

I smiled at their childish outburst. “I want to go out.” I said.

                “No.” Barron said.

                “Yes.” I retorted.

After a long argument between Barron and I, in which Lucas sided with Barron, I ignored them both and left to Hale and my bedroom. I put on some jean shorts and one of Barron’s old shirts. The shirt was way too large and didn’t fit properly so I tied it back with a hair ty. A bit of my stomach was showing but I didn’t care.

I walked downstairs and turned on the TV hoping that would mask the sound of the front door opening and closing. On my way out I grabbed Hale’s car keys and sprinted towards the car. Hale must have gone in his wolf form to pack building.

I didn’t have my licenses but Barron had been teaching me how to drive since we left our parents.

I wasn’t sure where I was going so I relied on my phone GPS to get me to the mall. It took me about thirty minutes to get there.

I found a parking spot fairly quickly. As I was getting out of the car a guy in a hoodie approached me.

Instinct told me to run but my curiosity and fear of running away and not having a valid reason stopped me. He might just walk by, I told myself. I shut the door to Hale’s car and dropped the keys.

I scolded myself for being so clumsy. I was still shaking from seeing the hooded man walking towards me when I felt a hand grasp my arm. I was spun around and slammed against the car.

The hooded man lifted his head so I could see his face. His bright purple eyes bore into mine and I felt panic swamp me. I tried to scream but my mouth wouldn’t form words. I tried to move out of his tight grip but I couldn’t move my limbs. I could see and hear everything that was happening but it was like I was listening through a tunnel. The sounds echoed in my mind and I struggled not to lose consciousness.

I watched out of the corner of my eye as a lady walked towards us and asked if we were okay.

“Yes. Sorry, sometimes we forget that not everyone is as into PDA as we are.” The words came out of my mouth and my voice but it wasn’t me who had spoken them.

The guys purple eyes never left mine. Smile. I heard the word in my mind but it wasn’t me who thought it. Suddenly I couldn’t focus on anything other than the word smile. I lost my train of thought. I don’t know when but I distantly felt as I smiled.

                Don’t-

The thought was cut short as the man with purple eyes threw me on the ground. He took off running. Even though his eyes had left mine I couldn’t move. My body felt numb and my eyes began to flutter.

Before I knew it Lucas and Barron were in front of my face. I couldn’t do or think anything. I watched as their lips moved but I couldn’t hear.

Barron lifted me in his arms and got into the back of Hale’s car with my head in his lap. Lucas got in the driver’s seat and began driving. As the car started moving the pain hit me as if I had been hit by a thousand buses at once.

I felt my body begin to react to the excruciating pain. I screamed but still couldn’t hear or see. It was as if my body wasn’t my own and I had no control. Barron tried to move me which made the pain worsen and I screamed louder.

It felt like eternity before I passed out from the pain. My body was on fire but my mind was overcome with fatigue. I felt myself in the emptiness. I ceased to exist, even if only for a little while.
