Chapter 4

Lucy's POV

I yawned as sleep began to fade and I became more aware of my surroundings. I was filled with a warmth that had nothing to do with the soft comforter.

I snuggled closer against Hale's chest. His arm tightened around my waist and I smiled. "I know you're awake." Hale mumbled.

I flipped over away from him and looked at the clock. Six a.m.

"When did I fall asleep?" I asked sitting up. The last memory I had was of him claiming me. I smiled at the thought and instinctively reached up to touch it. It stung a bit.

"Soon after I made that." he said referring to the claim. He placed his thumb over the sensitive flesh and began to trace circles. I grinned and placed my hand over his.

“Sadly, I have to go to the Pack building today and get some things handled; but I promise tonight we can talk and get to know each other better, okay?” Hale asked reluctantly pulling away from me.

“Yeah, sounds good.” As Hale took a shower and got dressed I did the same. I showered in a bathroom down the hall and decided to wear a purple summer dress that fell right above my knees.

I walked with Hale downstairs and out the door.

After he drove away I walked back inside and began making pancakes. Barron walked down a few minutes later scratching his head. “Can I have mine with two eggs?” I handed him the pancakes I’d made.

“Sure. I’m making some for myself too.” I had just cracked the eggs into the pan when Barron jumped out of his chair and put his hands over his ears only to pull them away a second later.

“That was weird.” He shook his head.

“What?” I asked. Barron was beginning to worry me.

“I could hear Hale’s voice in my head. It was… clear… and loud.” Just as I was about to ask what Hale’s voice said Lucas burst into the room.

“I smell pancakes! I like mine with strawberries on the side.” Lucas took a seat at the granite counter beside a very confused Barron. “What’s wrong?” Lucas asked Barron.

“I heard Hale in my head.” Barron sounded dazed but Lucas just snickered.

“That would be the pack link. It’s how we communicate when we are in our wolf form but we can use it when we are in human form too. “Lucas explained.

“Can every wolf hear what is said through the pack link?” Barron asked.

“No, just those of us who are in the pack.”

“But I’m not in your pack.”

“Hale must have added you in when he found out you’re Lucy’s brother.” Barron looked beyond angry.

“I never said I wanted to be part of this pack.” Barron roared, his eyes quickly shifting to black.

“What do you have against packs? You’ve never been a part of one.” I retorted. I had to admit I liked how everyone in the pack seemed to have each other’s backs; Barron and I had always been on our own.

Barron walked up to me and put his finger in my face. “More than you.” He shouted not backing up. Lucas was there in a second breaking up the fight.
