Chapter 4
I stood silently at my locker preparing to go to my last class of the day. I felt a light tap on my shoulder and instantly send chills down my spine. I turned around and it was Chase, he stood there baring an amazing smile, but he looked nervous. I slammed my locker and then stared up at him, facing him completely.
"Hi Vanessa." he said with a hint of shyness in his voice. I smiled on the inside at the fact that someone so beautiful could be shy.
"Hey Chase." I noticed curious eyes watching us as we stood in front of each other. In this school, gossip spreads like wildfire so if you don't want anything to be known by the entire school, I suggest you not tell it.
"Could I ask you something?" Chase said nervously. He tensed up in his broad shoulders and his slightly tanned cheeks started to turn pink. He leaned against the locker next to mine.
"Sure!" I said a little too excited, my eyes widened in a weird way and I involuntarily moved closer to him.
"What's your opinion of Tori?" He asked. He half smiled in a childish way that made me melt inside, and then I froze.
"Tori?" I said suddenly as I looked around the hallway for answers. I got a strange feeling like I had been punched in the gut.
"Well. yeah." He looked away awkwardly. "You two are best friends right?"
"Yea! I mean she's a sweet girl, she's always there when you need her. She can walk into a dark room and brighten it with just her smile, and she's beautiful of course." I half-smirked dryly. As I rambled on, I realized that I couldn't have lied for the life of me, which was really hard. Watching the way he brightened when I spoke of her made my stomach curl, I guess you could say I was a little jealous.
"Wow." He looked shocked, amazed, and everything in between.
"Thanks for the insight Ness, you're a good friend." He hugged me tightly. His soft hair swayed by my neck when he wrapped his arms around me. I blushed so hard that it was useless to try and hide it, so I stood there, red as a tomato. He poked me on the cheek and then walked over to his locker. Then all of a sudden, it hit me like a bomb. A good 'friend'. Just a friend.
I banged my head against my own locker when he left. It's like I dug myself into a deeper and deeper hole with him every time I talked to him.
Now, I was digging myself deeper to lift Tori and her devious plan higher. One thing I knew for sure is that she is definitely my best friend and I owe it to her. I turned around and Carly is now standing at Chase's locker talking to him. Carly is doing the whole flip-the-hair and bat-the-eyes thing that she does. I'm guessing it's a cheerleader thing because I've seen Victoria do it before too. She hands Chase a piece of paper and then walks off, twisting her hips which makes her extremely short skirt sway.
I slumped out of the school doors sadly, because Mrs.Francis canceled our project because the school board said it was too rated R. I was sad especially, because this was the only time I really got to spend with Chase. I decided not to go home and head to the park. Not too many people my age went to the park, but I felt like I could really relax and be myself there.
"Hey, Ness!" I heard a familiar voice called from behind me, Tori. I thought about ignoring her but that would have been wrong so I turned around.
"We need to talk." I could tell by the look in her eyes that she was serious.
"Well I was headed to that park uptown. You wanna come?" I ask.
"Ehh, not my scene.. but it'll do!" she follows me to me car. We get in and I head uptown. There is a strange silence in the car, almost suffocating. I look over at her and she's slumped down in her seat, which is weird because she hates slouching.
