The Girl I Left Behind

Fulfilling my Promise

After that realization, I suddenly blinked back to reality. I now knew what I had to do. It had been a long time, and I tried hard to forget about her and move on. But I couldn't. Because my heart still longs for her. She did welcome and acknowledge my presence, although I don't know if she fulfilled her promise. But with all that happened, I guess it's time to take the risk. To put down all bets and cards on the table. It was the least I could do for her, and now all fear and doubt escaped my mind as I ran the streets to reach the school in time for dismissal.

"Drrnnggggg.....!!!!", I heard the school bell ring and suddenly I saw her.

I approached her. I guess she was startled to see my appearance but right now, I just didn't care.

"Jane....it's been a long time. I never thought I'd see you again." , I told her.

"So did I." she said, tearing up.

"You remember our promise right?"

"Yes.", she said as she used a familiar looking handkerchief to wipe her tears away.

"Is that my handkerchief?", I said but she just nodded.

"I can't believe you kept it all these years."

"This was the only thing I have of you left."

Then silence dawned on them.

"Why are you here, Andrew?" she said.

"Well, I'm here to fulfill my promise to you." And at that, I bent down on one knee, with a ring on my hand.

"Andrew..." she said, but I cut her off.

"Jane Isabelle Lewis, I know I have done and missed out on a lot all these years, but now that I have found you again, I know what I must do. I love you and if you do this, I promise to make up for all those lost years all throughout our lives. So here it goes..... Will you.." i said, but was cut off by a voice behind her.

I didn't know that this voice would be the end of our story. Because as I looked behind her, I saw a young boy held by his father, a person who looked familiar to me- it was Andy!  And at that exact moment, the boy said one word that broke, tormented, killed and haunted my life.

"Mommy?"
