Run. It was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the people screaming and running. Panicking for something was following them.
"Daddy? What... What is happening? Why is everybody screaming in the streets?" I heard my daughter as she walked down the stairs with her stuffed bear hugged tightly against her chest.
"Honey, I want you to go up stairs and prepare a bag with your clothing and important things."
"B...But why? Dad...What is wrong?" She was scared and confused.
"Just go and do what I say."
Too late. One of them were already knocking on our door, blood staining the glass.
"Dad!"
I felt a collision against my body. -It had tackled me- it tried to bite me and scratch me, it screeched and grunted loudly. Its face was terrible - bloody and had some kind of hongus sprouting on some parts of its face. It's impossible to think that just this morning, this disturbing thing was my annoying neighbor.
I struggled to keep it away from anything it could get a bite on, while trying at the same time to shove the heavy body off of me. My daughter stared, panic in her eyes, and her breath heavy. Swallowing her fear, she charged in and kicked the attacker in his stomach giving me a chance to finally get him off of me. I grabbed a chair and smashed it against his back. Now is our chance.
"Let's get out of here." I grabbed my daughter's hand, making her drop her stuffed bear, and walked as fast as I could.
I grabbed the car keys before leaving the house, I got in my car and drove down the road. When I got to the highway, there was a jam."Fucking damn it!" I cursed under my breath. I saw more of those infected people running towards the cars.
"Dad!" My daughter screamed from the back seat.
One of them was running towards my car. I backed away and drove back to find another way. Screw gas. I'll take the long way if I have to.
. . .
Houses on fire, people screaming for help, running for their lifes. I didn't stop for anyone. I had my daughter and couldn't afford the risk of stopping. I needed to get to that damn quarantine zone, fast!
I turned around the block and people were screaming in the middle of the road, running. I tried to drive through them but, they were to many and they were running wildly.
"Dad!" My daughter pointed to the front of the car. Where there was one of those things ripping another's flesh. It was too gruesome. Seeing all it's organs fall out and the asphalt stain with the crimson blood as he drew his last breath and the sick one continued to scratch. I don't want my daughter to see such a thing. I accelerated, regardless of who or what I would hit, they'd move out of the way.
"Dad, what is happening? "
"I'll explain later!" I yelled to her as I proceeded to drive.
We're just a few miles away from that quarantine zone, but there was still chaos on the streets. People were still running for their lifes, and those things were everywhere... I turned on the radio. The signal was weak but I could still hear the news reporter's voice.
"Chaos has been spread through the streets."
"Yeah, no shit." I mocked as I drove through the crowds.
"We suggest you to avoid contact with people who might seem infected. Grab all the suplies you might need and leave to nearest quarantine zone."
"Daddy is that where we are going?" My daughter spoke up.
"Yes, honey. You rest. Will be there soon."
"I can't." My daughter paused and continued speaking. "Are we....Infected?"
"No...No, we are fine, honey." I wasn't sure how does one get infected, but one thing was sure: we were fine... At least, for now. "Get some sleep,Lillian..."
"Oh, alright." She groaned and curled herself on the seat, closing her eyes.
I glanced to the car's dash and saw a signal telling me I was low on gas. Fuck. This couldn't get any worse.
