"Miles?", Claire put her hand on his shoulder and he jumped.
"It's just me", Claire laughed, then looked around: "Where's your boyfriend?"
"Gone", Miles simply said.
They decided it was best to leave, too. Gwen and Nate could not be found, but they would be fine on their own.
Lawrence took the subway home, Claire and Miles took a cab.
As soon as they were sitting in the car, Claire grinned: "Isn't there something you'd like to tell me?"
Miles just shook his head and stared out the window. Even now, in the middle of the night, the streets were full of cars and all the lights blurred through the raindrops on the windows. Miles felt like he was in some clichée movie. Why did it always have to rain when something bad had happened?
"So", Claire continued, not noticing Miles' bad mood, "I think you're really cute together!"
Miles scoffed and then muttered: "Well, that's over anyway, after what happened tonight."
"What? No! The way you two were making out there, I doubt he'll just give that up so soon!", Claire winked.
"Wow", Miles said, "He saw how I killed someone!"
"He'll get over it, if you explain it to him!", Claire assured with, but when he did not answer, she added: "Otherwise, I'll have to kill him, too, because he broke my baby brother's heart."
"He's not breaking my heart", Miles muttered.
"Mhm, sure."
Miles rolled his eyes and decided to change the topic, he really did not want to think about this anymore.
"So, what about you and Lawrence? Seems like it finally worked out for you?"
"He's cute", was all Claire said about that.
Miles looked at her with doubt: "That's it?"
Claire simply shrugged, so Miles sighed: "Come on, just admit it! That poor guy is already shy enough, you can't play with him like that."
"Pff", Claire scoffed, "I'm not playing with anyone!"
"Mhm. Do you have any idea what it's like to be so in love with a girl that pretends to be too cool and keeps you waiting like that?"
Claire now grinned: "Well, you wouldn't know, either, because you like boys!"
Miles pulled a face at her, then the cab stopped in front of their house.
As soon as they had entered the penthouse, Dad came towards them: "How did it go?"
Claire proudly told him: "Great, we killed both vampires and saved the girl they were attacking. Everything worked out perfectly!"
"Great", Dad nodded contently, then went to his bedroom.
"Although I had my doubts about Miles' friends", Claire added, a bit more quietly and Logan gave her a confused look: "They were there, too?"
Claire grinned widely: "Mhm, someone very special, right?"
Miles shot her an angry glare and she quickly raised her hands in defense: "Okay, calm down, I'll shut up."
It was now saturday and Miles had already tried to call Scott at least a thousand times, but Scott did not pick up, and neither did he answer his texts.
Miles was walking up and down in his room and tried again, but then the mechanic voice told him that Scott's mailbox was now full and he could not leave any more messages.
Frustrated, Miles threw his phone on his bed, so that it jumped off it, against the wall and then landed on the floor.
"Shit", Miles cursed, carefully examining his phone. The screen had a few more cracks than before this, but at least it was still working.
"Are you okay?", Logan's voice suddenly sounded from behind him.
"Yeah", Miles said and Logan leant against the door frame: "You sure?"
Miles was still looking at his phone, then he blurted out: "Have you ever been in love?"
Logan looked at him, surprised: "Why?"
"Just answer the question, please", Miles asked and Logan frowned: "Um, I don't know. No, not really."
Miles sighed: "And have you never wondered if this job is really worth all this?"
"That's just the way it is, Miles", Logan said. "We grew up like this."
"And what would you do if you fell in love?", Miles wanted to know.
"I don't know, I've always avoided that ..."
Miles sat on the edge of his bed and muttered: "And what if you can't do anything about it?"
Logan was quiet for a moment, then he eventually replied: "If it's real, you can't do anything about it, anyway. You'll have to decide what's more important to you."
"But can't you have both?"
"Well", Logan began, "Dad did that, too. But therefore, he had to tell Mom the truth and you have to be very sure about it, before you trust someone with those secrets. And you'd always have to be careful not to endager your girlfriend."
"Boyfriend", Miles corrected his brother.
"What?" ,Logan was confused and Miles looked at him: "I'm talking about a boy."
Logan just stared at him in disbelief, but Miles ignored that. Logan was right, so he made a decision: "I'm talking to him now!"
And with that, he stood up, leaving his brother.
He had to see Scott.
