Connall had tried. Tried and failed to keep the girl from finding him. But she had burned through it all.

Gods. He thought. Sometimes he wished he had someone who'd burn the whole world down for him.

Fenrys. Fenrys would. Just like he'd done many years ago, when he swore the blood oath to Maeve and then served her in bed to take her attention away from him.

Not that he'd ever mentioned that do his brother.

But that didn't matter as Connall called out to Vaughan to help him catch the girl before she found Rowan. Then it would be together.

At that time Whitethorn was probably awake, and even if not at his best, the two of them together could wreak the whole city down.

Vaughan appeared beside him. His eyes turned to Connall.

What? They said.

"The girl I... she's more powerful than I'd expected from a half-breed" Connall muttered. Vaughan didn't usually need words to express what he wanted to express. And at that moment all Connall could see in his expression was disappointment.

Vaughan turned into his animal form. His huge wings stretched.

He seemed to miss some feathers in his left wing and there was a red scar flashed across it.

With his clothes Connall hadn't noticed, but that looked like a really deep cut.

"What happened there?" He pointed. Vaughan shifted his wing and started flying. His eyes met Connall's and, in a final statement to that long conversation they said. Nothing.

And so they went after the girl. Connall hoped she hadn't gotten to Whitethorn yet.

~^~^~

He was chained. Iron all around him. He could hear a male's breath circling him. Fenrys.

Rowan was in a dark room, probably one of the torture rooms Maeve had.

Rowan tried to pull the chains, test their strength, but he already knew they were unbreakable. "Where is she Fenrys? Where is Aelin?" He dared ask.

"I... can't say. I'm sorry Rowan. But... Maeve... she has a plan..." Fenrys was gasping. He was trying to fight the oath. Rowan felt pity for him. He had always hated the oath. And what Maeve had him doing... Rowan knew he hated her, and that was why the queen liked so much to have him under control.

"Do you remember that demi-Fae with fire magic? She also stayed in Mistward." Fenrys continued. Rowan was still pushing and pulling the iron chains from his hands and feet, with no success whatsoever.

"She came to Doranelle in no time. I had no idea where she'd gone. Until now. She..." Fenrys winced. His voice was lower when he spoke again. "She's like Aelin when you found her. I don't know why... but... Maeve has a collection of fire... fire users... and... also hea..."

There was a flash of light and suddenly the room was on fire.

That blue fire Rowan knew so well. "Aelin..." he whispered. With the light of the fire he could now see he had a huge wound on his side. He knew who had done it. After they had gotten Aelin, Rowan and Fenrys had fought.

Rowan was clearly winning, but when he was about to end it. Finnish him. His mind had roared. But he couldn't bring himself to do it.

Fenrys had been his friend, even if they were most of the time arguing with each other. Fenrys had been his companion for years. And in the end, even if they were on different sides, he couldn't bring himself to kill him.

Fenrys noticed it. And with Rowan's hesitation he was able to knock him out and bring him there.

Aelin approached him through the flames. There was terror in Fenrys's onyx eyes. Pure terror as looked at her and at what he had made to Rowan. Her mate.

Rowan might have saved him, but Aelin...

But her eyes turned right at Rowan. "Let's go." She said. The heat of her fire was melting the iron, and somehow she managed not to let it touch his skin.

She had fire all around him. But Rowan knew her, and she was exhausted. He channeled some of his already drained magic for her.

And he could swear he heard her thank him down the bond.

It felt strange. It was the first time she had ever used it. But he couldn't think much about it because now they had to go.

She took his hand and they ran. But right as he thought she would turn left, to the entrance doors, she turned right.

First Rowan thought she had lost herself, but then she said down the bond, making him shiver a little.

I heard what Fenrys said, there are other fire users. I can't let them here. It would be the same as leaving them to their deaths.

He didn't fully get why Maeve, who definitely didnt like fire would want to have fire users. But then he remembered what she had done to Aelin. And what had been done to the girl who had burned Morath down.

Maeve was using them as weapons. Weapons against something, and Rowan wanted to know why.
