Feyre
I watched as Azriel and Celaena were engulfed in gold and blue flames. Azriel's shadows were just visible underneath it all, but he had completely disappeared. I felt panic rise in my throat and took a step foreword, only to be stopped by Rhys' outstretched arm.
"We need to help him!" I shouted over the roar and crackle of the mighty bonfire that stood before us. I could see that Rhys wanted to help his brother as much as I did, but until we knew what was going on he didn't think it was safe to intervene.
"This is the most powerful fire magic I've ever seen," he said. "Do you think she's from the Autumn Court?"
I turned his face until his ear was closer to mine, so I didn't have to shout at him, and turned back to Az and Celaena. I tried to get a bit closer but the heat was so intense that I could only manage one step in their direction. I peered into the flames and noticed something rather unusual.
Among the gold and blue flames I could just make out swirls of silver. They writhed around the hazy outline of Celaena, gathering at her back like wings of molten metal. My gaze drifted to where Azriel's figure was just becoming noticeable. I realised with a start that his wings were being wreathed in shadows, becoming the opposite of Celaena's.
"We need to stop this," Rhys said, panic slowly becoming more notable in his voice. We watched as the flames gradually died down revealing more and more of Azriel and Celaena's figures. I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw Azriel out of the flames, completely untouched.
I looked to Rhys, who had the distinct look of confusion written all over his face.
"What is it?" I asked, my voice wary and shaking. Rhys merely shook his head at me and turned back to Azriel. It seemed like he was just gazing into Celaena's eyes, but there was more to it than that. She inclined her head to one side, his nod followed. He smirked, she smiled. It was almost like they were communicating, like Rhys and I do.
But that's couldn't be possible, could it? I had only ever heard of mates being able to do that and surely Az and Celaena weren't mates... were they?
I shook my head, clearing my thoughts. I surged forward and pushed passed Rhys's arm. Azriel frowned at Celaena before she tired to look in my direction, her eyes burning gold and blue. I suddenly noticed how different she looked. Not only was she now far, but she looked healthy, like changing forms had rejuvenated her body.
'How did she do that anyway?' I thought to myself.
Her face looked fuller, with even rosier cheeks than before and a healthy shine. She stood taller too, though it was obvious that her back still bothered her greatly.
"What the hell was that?!" I heard a voice shout behind me. Nesta had stood up at some point and had positioned herself so she was shielding Elain. Lucian had also moved so he was sitting next to Elain, she was gripping his forearm tightly. I saw Nesta's eyes flash dangerously as she shouted and looked at her with a soft expression on my face.
"Nesta, please," I said and gestured to Elain. My sister understood my meaning and sat down beside her, taking one of her hands and calming her down slowly. I turned back towards Celaena and Azriel.
"My sister is right," I began. "You need to give us a very good explanation, both of you."
My voice was calm but my eyes were full of steel as Celaena nodded her head.
