After parking the car, my dad and I go inside of the police station.
"Jon! Long time no see!" I look up at the middle-aged man and see his smirk as he speaks to my father.
"Chuck, how's it going?" My dad smiles.
"It's going, you know. This must be Addilyn." Chuck casts a glance towards me, but frowns at the sight of my swollen face.
"That asshole." Chuck mumbles, talking about Jared I assume.
"Yeah, I know." My dad nods.
"Bernard should be out any minute. Just have a seat." Chuck smiles, pointing his gaze to the chairs near the front of the station.
"Take care Chuck." My dad says, turning around to guide me towards the chairs.
"Want something to drink kiddo?"
"No thank you." I reply, feeling a set of nerves kick in.
I have never been inside of this police station before, let alone questioned by an officer.
"You don't have to be nervous. All you need to do is answer his questions truthfully. I'll be there the entire time." My dad says, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
"Dad, I don't think I want you to hear everything." I admit, feeling my cheeks turn pink.
"Addie, I already listened to Shane's story. It can't be too much harder the second time around."
"But dad, I have more details. Different details. Please." I beg.
"Okay, I will stay out here." He sighs. "Just make sure you are completely honest."
"No problem."
"Mr. Bishop. Nice to see you again after yesterday. Won't you both come in?" The man I am assuming to be Bernard says, after stepping outside of his office door.
"Hey there Bernard. My daughter here would like to do this without me in the room if you don't mind. It makes her more comfortable." My dad says, standing up to walk me over to Bernard.
Once we reach him, I take in his tired features. The grey hairs popping out of his beard. The wrinkles around his eyes every time he smiles or frowns. He looks as though this job takes a toll on him. I can't even imagine being under that much stress on a daily basis.
I begin feeling more nervous just taking in the size of Bernard. He definitely ate all of his vegetables as a kid.
"Sure thing. Not a problem. Hello Addilyn." Bernard smiles glancing down at me. "My name is Bernard, but you can call me officer B."
"Hello." I quietly say, pushing a piece of hair behind my ear.
I notice Bernard take an extra glance at my face, and then turns his hard gaze over to my father who only nods.
"Well then, let's get this show on the road, yeah?" Bernard says, opening his office door wide so we both can walk inside.
I nod and turn to give my father a hug.
"I'll be right out here if you need me." My dad reassures, making a smile appear on my face.
"Thanks." I mumble into his chest.
