he shakes everything away with a shake of his head and takes off again. i giggle after him and sprint too, although his legs are longer than mine.

he turns around, taunting me, and he yells follow me! before starting to grapple up what looks like the tallest tree in the field.

and i join him, laughing as the sky gets closer, and the world becomes more visible. i can feel that lukewarm sunshine splashing onto my face again and i climb higher and higher until the sun is warmer than i've ever felt it and i look over to him and we laugh in pure euphoria as the sun creates golden puddles on our faces and-

the branch gives way.

i land with a thud, sending the birds into a cawing malarkey.

i close my eyes, only to have to reopen them to let the flood of tears gushing out. my arm limps and oh god i can't feel it and i can't breathe-

i can't breathe-

his yelling pierces my panic and he kneels down next to me.

he's come to get me.

he shushes my crying with soft whispers and terrible jokes as he carefully picks me up.

and everything's ok.

we walk slowly back to the car, threading in and out of the trees.

the sun looks down on us. it's still warm. warmer than i've ever felt it.

and in that moment i realise that everything is alright. we're going to be ok. the sun is shining, and everything is going to be alright.

we leave a susurrus singing behind us, keeping our secrets locked away for another two boys in love.
