Colby's POV

I had my beanie up and my head down with my jacket hanging loosely on my body. I was tapping my ring covered hands against my thighs to the beat of my music as people moved out of the way with whispers and glances. Some were good and some were bad, girls would either fear me or love me and guys would usually hate me or wanna be me. There was no inbetween and I've just pushed myself from everyone....well for the most part. I have to have fun once in a while right? I walked down the hall of our school heading to our classroom when I heard a thud and a groan. I rolled my eyes but pulled out my earbuds anyway, having a feeling I knew who it was. I walked toward the sound, and as I walked toward the group of people watching what was happening, they turned and made a small path for me. I got to the front and froze when I saw what was happening. A small blond twerp was on the floor and he was bruised, badly. But some of them looked like they were healing, like they didn't come from this fight. And my friend Jake was standing over him with dark eyes as he growled at the boy.

"I warned you this would happen. All you had to do was stay away from her but you just couldn't could you? Now she's all over you and I have no shot with her, unless you wind up dead that is."

"I-if you let me go I could just tell her that-"

"Shut up! You have no way of fixing what you did." I watched Jake rear up to kick him and I sighed then something caught my eye. The boys bag had about three gay pins on it, Jesus Jake do you not look for these things? I thought before I walked up and grabbed his shoulder pulling him back.

"Dude cool it." I mumbled to him as he pushed me off of him.

"Why should I?!" He hissed back and I simply pointed at the blondes backpack.

"Let's go." I said as Jake hung his head and I dragged him out of the circle, down the hall and around the corner. Then I pushed him against the locker.

"Seriously Jake? I have told you so many times that if your gonna start a fight you have to get all of the information first."

"I know I'm sorry I just-"

"No you didn't just, Jake. That poor kid was most likely abused at home, and that girl is probably "all over him" because he's a guy friend that she can talk to about guys and looks and friends without all the drama that girls bring. So next time you want to beat a kid up ask questions and look for obvious signs!" He nodded and I let him go and gently pulled him off the locker. "Come on let's get to class" I said as I handed him his stud nose ring I had borrowed yesterday since my mom didn't want me wearing black to dinner. Jake took it with a smile and put it in before we both put an earbud in and walked to class. What I hadn't noticed was the small boy who had been watching our entire conversation.

We got to English class five minutes after the bell rang but our teacher didn't care. None of our teachers cared because we got good grades. Jake and I were both straight A students, each with the lowest grade of a 95%. Of course no one except our teachers and parents knew this since it would ruin our reputation, and our teacher always had us do online tutoring for other students through a special texting and drawing app. So, Jake and I walked into class, sat in the back, and propped our feet up on our desk like we always do. Mrs.Hathaway, our teacher, gave us a slight nod to acknowledge that we were here. We nodded back and flipped through our phones as we turned on our recorders that were under our desk so we could go over the lecture later. It was perfect, we looked like we didn't care about school but we still got everything we needed to get good grades. As Jake and I were about to start a stupid game of cup pong, the classroom door opened and everyone looked up. The small boy from earlier walked into class as he looked at the ground. Mrs. Hathaway smiled softly at him and walked over to him.

"I'm glad you were able to make it to class sam. Why don't you take a seat in front of Colby right there?" He looked up and we made eye contact, and I had to hold back a smile as I watched his eyes go wide. He looked at Mrs.Hathaway and gave her a quick nod before he looked back at me and made his way toward the desk in front of me. I wonder if he had that expression because I was one of the scary bad boys, or because I was sitting next to, and friends with, the kid that beat him up. Once Sam sat down I looked back at my phone and texted Jake.

'You know what you have to do'

'Yea I know at least I don't have to get up this time' I cracked a smile as he pulled out a post-it note and started writing. I had made a deal with him, I'd teach him how to be cool and how to lay low while still getting good grades, and whenever he screwed up he had to apologize for it, in a lowdown bad boy kinda way. It was what kept us from going dark and really not caring, Jake and I both agreed that we needed it. Once he finished writing the note he passed it to me and I proof read it.

'Sam,
Yes I know your name and don't freak out okay? I got a little heated in the hall earlier and it wasn't cool. I should have at least let you speak or seen the pins on your bag. Oh and TOP is a great band by the way, good choice. Just keep this on the downlow or you won't have someone to save you from what I do to you.
-Jake'

I nodded and carefully put the note on Sams desk, then Jake started our game of cup pong. Jake and I played battleship, cup pong, pool, and knockout on our phones before Sam noticed the note on his desk. I watched him read it over and over again like he couldn't believe it, or thought it was some kind of joke. I smiled a little than saw Mrs.Hathaway looking at Sam, then she looked at me and I shook my head slowly. She smiled and went back to looking through her papers, and I went back to my phone as kids started to turn to look in our general direction. When the bell rang I watched Sam jump out of his seat and quickly walk out of the room. Jake and I chuckled and fistbumped before we walked out together. We walked down the hall and skipped second period, PE, because we didn't technically take the class but it had to be on our schedule. Jake and I walked out to the field and sat on the bleachers with our music.

"I still don't think he fully processed the note I wrote him" Jake laughed with a smile. I shook my head.

"When does anyone? I think they are too scared of what will happen if they spill our secret to fully understand that it was an apology" Jake nodded and popped out a pack of cigarettes and I pulled out my lighter. I don't remember when or why we started smoking but we had and it had become routine. We only smoked once a day though, and it was just enough to last the day. We lit up and I relaxed as I breathed in deeply. When I let out a ring of smoke I could see Sam in the building in front of us, and he was watching us. I just barely brushed Jake and motioned in Sams general direction. He laughed and looked at me after he saw Sam.

"Dude what if he has like a crush on you? Thinks your all heroic and stuff because you protected him and now he's all attracted to you or something?"

"So what if he is?" I laughed. "It's just like every other girl in this school that fawns over the two of us. The poor boy seems like he needs more light in his day" I smiled and nodded in his direction and I watch he's as his eyes got wide and he ducted.

"Don't tell me your gonna-"

"Jake I'm not that mean. I might be a bad boy but I have a heart"

"What?!" He gasped in fake shock. "Thee bad boy Colby Brock has a heart?" We laughed and joked and talked on the bleachers until the bell for break rang
