#64 in Fantasy ... Dimitri is leaving on a mission. Before that he finally persuades Rose to get married. Everybody is excited for the marriage of the first Gaurdian couple in the Moroi World. But...
No sooner had the words escaped her lips, than I froze.
"I want Rose Hathaway to be the queen."
These words hit my heart hard.
I stood speechless unable to utter a single word. It was sinful for a dhampir like me to even think about taking up royal responsibilities, a position which is held in high esteem in our world.
Whatever the situation, someone like me could never ever dream of talking up the position which was held in the highest esteem in our community.
But I was spared a reply when Dimitri spoke for me, "Never!"
Sonya looked surprised and so did Adrian.
"Even if Rose wants to be the queen, I would definitely try my best to dissuade her. It's not safe at this moment. I won't just risk Rose for keeping the throne occupied," he said with determination.
"What do you mean?" Adrian enquired pointedly.
"He means that with all the situations and the rebellions going on at court, people won't accept Rose on the throne, whatever the case may be," explained Sonya.
"Yes, there are people who can aid Tasha to break out of jail," he looked at Tasha, who had been put to sleep by Adrian's compulsion, "Tasha was the most well-known enemy of the crown, a queen murderer. That means some people were too excited to dethrone the queen. What do you think will be their reaction when her friend, that too a Dhampir takes over the throne? Rose's life would be at peril. Those people will stop at nothing. They will plot against her too. I can't stand by and see the situations push her to death. I had thought that I lost her once. I can't bear to lose her again."
I could see the pain in Dimitri's eyes as he spoke. His eyes were glassy, remembering the tines when Tasha shot me and I was as good as dead.
I shivered unknowingly. I would not be the queen for the hell of it.
" But," argued Adrian," Rose's safety is definitely my concern. Yet Jill is at risk then too... Anybody has to come to the throne, it simply can't stay vacant. We can't give it to someone else because with the current political situations, we don't know who is a, friend and who an enemy. Amoung the council members too. I won't trust my uncle too. We need to have someone on the throne who will gladly return the throne to Lissa."
"But whoever will be appointed will be temporary. They will come on the condition by signing a bond that they'll return the throne," I asked.
"Girl, the position of the queen in this world is quite different. You just can't be a semi-monarch. If you take up responsibilities you need to be selected the monarch and don the crown of power. If you're going to be queen, you need the oath, you need a coronation even if it is for a few days. Our ancestors put down these rules. You can't deny them, Rose. The office of the queen is thus something which can't be mishandled with," Sonya said, shaking her head.
"And so, " added Adrian,"Taking everything into consideration, Jill's age, your position, your loyalty and your intelligence and decision making abilities, I absolutely feel that you should take up the throne. I'm sure you'd jump into that danger if it's for Lissa or Jillian. You would definitely shield Jillian from the effects. And as for your safety, you'll get the same train of royal guardians for your protection and Dimitri can stay like your shadow throughout."
"But then who'll go to search for Lissa?"
That was Dimitri.
"We'll appoint guardians and let them know of the location. It is just a thorough search, nothing that you both need to involve yourselves with. Handling the political turmoil is more important at this, stage. Please Dimitri, don't deny us the privilege of having Queen Rosemarie Hathaway," said Sonya.
I could see the dilemma in Dimitri's eyes mirror mine.
We both stared at each other, a silent communication running. He seemed to ask my consent and, I knew he could feel my discomfort and yet we both knew we were in a tight corner.
Adrian was right. If there was any way to shield Jill and ensure Lissa's throne, I'd gladly do it how much risk it involved.
"I'll stay with you always, ever, guarding you," Dimitri said in a voice of acceptance and finality.
"We'll have each other's back," I sighed, turning to Dimitri.
"So," Sonya encouraged.
"So you can go talk to the council. I'd take up royal responsibilities and preserve the honor of my position and dedicate my life for it, whatever maybe the consequences," I declared.
Dimitri wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into a kiss. Soon there was only me and him as we drowned in that passionate kiss.
