Prologue
Part 1
I can still remember that day perfectly. It’s weird, you know, how that happens. How one day can stay so fresh in your mind forever while others fade away so easily. We don't get the choice.. so How does my brain choose which memories to cherish, which days to never forget? Is it because I have relived that day so frequently that I have memorized every thought that entered my mind, numbered every breath that was drawn, and counted every step that I took? I don’t know. Maybe.
I will admit, that day wasn’t exactly ordinary to begin with. Sure, the sun rose and throughout the world people carried on with their regular routines. But I, however, was about to give the performance of a lifetime to a panel of judges that would determine, ultimately, my destiny. Originally, that performance was all that was on my mind that morning, from the minute I woke up. This was “boot camp” week of the X Factor UK. It was my shot to prove that I had what it took to keep going as a competitor. There was no question, I had to hit every note and deliver an emotion that would leave the judges satisfied. Some greater power, however, had something else in mind for me that day. A plan from above. Or from below, I suppose. That day was going to change me, alright. Just not in the way I had expected. Not at all.

Louis’ POV
“No matter what, I love you,” Hannah spoke into the phone. It was three hours until I was up to perform and I was sitting outside on the cold concrete steps that lead to the X Factor studio. I was shaking violently but the smooth words from my girlfriend on the other end of my phone relaxed me and I sank into the steps.
“I just feel like this is the one shot I get. If I mess it up, that’s it I’m done for it,” I confessed. My nerves were obvious in my uneven tone, “What if they’ve changed their minds since the last audition, what if they don’t like me anymore? I’ll look like a bloody fool,” I heard her let out a deep breath.
“Louis, you are good enough and you don’t need a bunch of know it all judges to make that true,” I stayed quiet, closing my eyes. The cool wind rose goose bumps from my skin and I let out a sigh, “Listen, Lou, I gotta get back to class. I’ve been in the toilets for fifteen minutes. Call me as soon as you get off stage, I’ll be home by then. I love you,” I opened my eyes and ran a hand through my hair.
“I love you, too, Han. Thanks for the call,” I hung up my cell phone and dropped my head into my hands, elbows resting on my knees.
I stared down at my blue Toms. They were ripped and faded and well loved. Mum had bought them for me only four months before, but I was reckless. Within the first week they had already been torn on my left heel. Mum never let me live that one down.
“Mind if I join?” A voice asked me. I rolled my eyes at the ground, not wanting to be bothered or distracted.
I looked up, though, and came out of my comfortable mindset. The sun shocked me with it’s brightness and I squinted my eyes, trying to hide from the blinding glare coming from the sky. Doing so, I found my eyes being met by a pair of curious green ones, belonging to a certain curly haired boy. Almost hypnotized, my mouth opened a small bit as I was plunged into the depth of his stare. Swallowing thickly, I blinked hard and shook my head a little, focusing less on the beauty of his eyes and more on the smirk that was playing across his lips.
The boy’s hands were settled in the pockets of his khaki pants. He rocked coolly back and forth on his heels, his curls dancing along with his motions. His eyes were locked on me as he waited for a response. I cleared my throat and awkwardly motioned to the spot next to me on the stairs.
“Not at all,” I managed, taking my eyes off of him, returning them to my feet. He happily sat down next to me, his elbow accidentally hitting my shoulder on his way down. I winced discretely and my breath hitched in my throat. Not because it had hurt me, but the exact opposite, actually. I looked up, meeting his eyes once again, losing myself somewhere far away, somewhere that I wanted to get to know.
Goosebumps rose from my skin once again, unexpected. There was no more breeze. Any wind that could have provoked that tingling feeling had died down and all that remained was a beating heat from the sun. Looking in his eyes, I knew where they appeared from. No matter how confusing it may have seemed, there was no denying what his eyes did to me. I was captured inevitably on the day the I first met Harry Styles.
