Hiccup

I looked out across the ocean, the moon reflecting off of the rippling surface. We had just returned from the latest raid, luckily no one had been injured this time. It's been five years since I lost part of my back left leg to a trap. Luckily Toothless still remained unharmed.

Toothless is my brother. Well, twin brother. We've been through everything together. Every raid, every attack and every injury. I don't know who our parents are. As far as I know they're human. That's the thing, if a dragon dies they become human and vice versa. This cycle repeats until old age but every time you die you get a new scar. I was lucky I just lost my leg instead of getting killed by Vikings.

I forgot to mention, we live on an island full of dragons. There are thousands of us here. I honestly couldn't imagine a better place to live.

I lay down, preparing to sleep. I know Toothless had gone to get something to eat but I heard him sneaking up behind me.

"Don't even try it." I say, turning to face him.

He sighs, defeated. "I thought maybe this once I could finally get a sneak attack on you." He lays down next to me.

"Haha. Yeah, you'll definitely be able to pull that." I reply sarcastically. He's tried to sneak up on me many times before, it's never worked.

"I'm guessing you're heading to bed?" Toothless asks, standing.

"In a bit. I might take a flight." I tell him, looking back out across the ocean.

"Want me to come with you?"

"Sure."

The two of us take off, diving down and skimming over the water. The stars and the moon reflected off the surface and some Thunderdrums swam beneath us. We raced each other, did tricks in the air and dove down from the clouds to see how close we could get to the water without touching it. It was beautiful and quiet.

"It's been a while since we've done this." I say, looking over at Toothless.

"Too long." Toothless agrees.

The two of us make it back to the island and into the cave we shared. Toothless paced in a circle, heating the ground beneath him, before laying down. I did the same.

"Goodnight, Toothless."

"Goodnight, Hiccup."

And with that I drifted off.

I'm woken up by Toothless nudging me. "Come on, we're all going to go eat." He says.

I get up, stretching. I loved going to eat with all the dragons. Everyone flying, diving into the water, catching fish, it was the best part of the day.

We got to the fishing spot. Toothless and I looked at each other and both dove down at the same time. The water was cold and icy but Toothless and I both came up with a fish. We make eye contact, eat our fish, and go again, diving and catching fish until we were full.

We land on some snow covered sea stacks a little ways away from the fishing spot. We romped around for a while, play fighting and wrestling. I stop when I hear distant shouting. Turning, I look out over the water and see them. Vikings.

"Vikings!" I yell out to every dragon there.

I shouldn't have said it. Everything went into mass chaos. No one seemed to know which way to fly to get away. That's when I realized we were also surrounded.

"Toothless! Follow me!" I roar, taking off. I make sure he's following and rise into the clouds. On the way up I see several dragons get taken down and dragged onto boats. They'd be human by the end of the day.

To be human was disgusting to me. No wings, fire, claws, scales... just nothing. It was gross.

I stop above the clouds and face Toothless, glad he didn't get caught.

"You okay, bud?"

He nods.

When we get back to the island it's quiet. The only sound was the sound of wings as the remaining dragons landed. There was still quite a few of us left. Maybe fifteen or so were taken.

"Great, more vikings. Just what we all need." Toothless growls.

"Well at least most of us were able to get away."

Vikings were the last thing we needed. They were becoming larger in numbers and the death of more and more dragons didn't help. They seemed to be everywhere now. I was surprised they hadn't found our island yet. Although, I'll admit, it was quite hidden. In order to get there you had to zig zag your way through crumbling sea stacks and thick fog. But I guess it's a good thing that they haven't found us.

The rest of the day drags on, most of us still grieving. Night falls and I turn to Toothless.

"Late night flight again?" I ask him.

"Alright." He says, getting up.

We take off and soar through the clouds, spinning and twisting through the sky. The adrenaline rush that came from flying was amazing. I smile at Toothless.

We fly for a while longer and something catches my eye. I turn and see a Viking ship sailing a little ways away from us. I hear the word 'fire' and turn as a net wraps itself around me. "Too-" Is all I manage to say before I hit the ice cold water.
