I breathed heavily. I heard a voice say what sounded like my name, yet I couldn't gather the strength to lift my head or even open my eyes to look. I could hear small rocks scatter on the ground. This was it. Someone had found me. They were going to make me human. I let out a sad and low coo.
"Toothless!"
I recognized that voice. Hiccup. I coo softly.
"Oh, gods." He kneels beside me, pulling out a knife.
My eyes widen, he's not going to make me like him, is he? I look at him, my eyes wide with fear.
He cuts the ropes of the bola that bound me. He wasn't going to kill me. He was freeing me! I couldn't be happier. He didn't side with the Vikings. I slowly stand. Hiccup wraps his arms around my neck. I stand there for a second, unsure what to do. I slowly put a paw around him. He tightens his grip. I guess he really missed me.
I couldn't be happier. My brother was here, standing right before me.
"Hiccup!" I exclaim.
He looks at me funny. I sigh. He doesn't understand me, not anymore. I don't speak human language. I knew it was against Dragon kind but there was no way I was leaving him here. I was going to bring him with me. It didn't matter what the others said. I take off but don't get very far before crashing to the ground, dust coming up from the ground around me. What was wrong with me? I stand and shake myself off. I look back at Hiccup to make sure he was still here. He stood there watching me. I take off again. I get a little farther than the last attempt but still crash to the ground.
Everything hurt. I huff, and sit taking a break. Hiccup walks over to where I sat. He starts looking me over. I watch him carefully. He pats my back gently to reassure me. I move to lay down, heating the ground below me. Hiccup laughs a little. I coo and settle down. He sits next to me, leaning against my stomach.
We both rest for a bit. He tells me a little bit about the vikings he lives with. His so called mother used to be a dragon too. His now father however didn't like the fact that Hiccup talked about wanting to be a dragon again. I couldn't blame Hiccup for wanting to be a dragon again though. I wish I could help him. Though I cannot bring myself to kill him myself. I couldn't bare do that to him. I would never forgive myself.
Hiccup eventually stood up to make sure I was okay. He had me extend my wings to check for rips and tears. I relax, figuring I was just tired from the raid and in pain from being brought down. That's when Hiccup gasped. I lift my head to look at him. He looked tense. I rumble as if asking what was wrong. I'm guessing he understood me.
"We have a huge problem." He says gesturing to my tail.
I look at it and my eyes widen. There was only one fluke. My right one. My left was gone, all that was left of it was a very thin piece of where it had once been. No wonder I couldn't fly. I physically couldn't. I was a downed dragon. I look at him. We shared the same look. Fear, worry. I couldn't fly.
"There has to be a way to fix this." He begins to pace.
I shake my head. Once a downed dragon, always a downed dragon. I know you can't just get a fluke back. There's no way.
I watched as Hiccup picked up a stick and sat on a rock. He started drawing. Since when did he learn to do things with human hands? It bothered me. He drew quietly as I watched over his shoulder. This was ridiculous. The more I thought about it the more it angered me. Dragons could do just as much as humans, and more! I stand on two feet trying to mimic how Hiccup walked now. I break a branch off of a small tree with a loud snap. I hobble back over to Hiccup and start drawing lines in the dirt. Hiccup eventually looked up from his drawing and started to watch what I was doing. He started laughing, I'm guessing I looked ridiculous drawing with a stick in my mouth. Not my fault dragons don't have thumbs.
We sat together for the rest of the day. I could tell Hiccup was stressed. I nudge him gently with my nose. He looks over at me and smiles.
"I'm okay, bud." He puts his arm around my neck.
I rest my head down. This was so weird. A human and a dragon. Our species would go crazy. My stomach growls which causes Hiccup to look at me.
"I'll try and sneak some food here for you tomorrow. It's the least I can do if you're stuck here." He pats my neck.
I coo. I could only ever feel safe with one person, no matter what they were and that was Hiccup.
Just me and Hiccup, against the world.
