It was the beginning of the winter.
Dogs barking and men voices echoed through the valley. They were hunting deer before they migrate to higher places on the mountaintop.
First snow covered the ground last night and people were using sleds pulled by the dogs to travel faster.
Village chief Achak (Spirit) was organizing hunt splitting his men by the borders of woods.
They manage to chase deer closer to them and he was satisfied.
Right next to him, in her own sled, was his youngest daughter Taima(Thunder). She had a big smile on her beautiful face while golden sun rays were lighting her silky tanned skin.
Her eyes were searching the woods while her sled passed by.She loved hunting and since she was a little, her father would bring her with him.
Fearless girl, brave and smart, a real Indian warrior and like her name Taima which means thunder, she was fast and strong.
Her father taught her well and she had success in hunting every time.
When others started shooting with their arrows, deer who been hit fell on the ground.Men came and started to load their bodies onto the sleds. They will transfer them into the village where women waited to cut the meat and hang in the smokehouse. Some of it will be put in underground storages with ice blocks to be saved for the winter.
This hunting was a tradition in her village and, a necessary food supply so they can live through the winter. This place was far away from the civilization and people here had rules on their own.
Chief was a highly respected person in the village and so was his family members.Even tho Taima just turned twenty, people respected her, and not just because of her father, but because she was a brave, honest and skillful hunter.
She came off of the sleds walking in the woods to where she saw one hit deer went.Others were gone and she was alone in that area but she had no fear. She was never afraid of anything.
It was quiet in the woods and her footsteps through the snow where the only sound.
She has found deer lying by the big rock tilted head and empty eyes looking at the sky.
-I'm sorry deer but I your life ended here, your meat will help my people to survive this winter and I'm so grateful for your sacrifice- she bowed towards the dead animal with respect.
It was her little ritual after every hunting.Even tho she was a hunter, she never enjoyed killing itself. She did that for the sake of others and never for pleasure.
Taima kneeled in front of a deer and pull her knife starting to cut him so that blood can be released freely.
Quiet sound above her head made her muscles tighten. She felt danger not really knowing why or from where. Her eyes lifted up and on the top of that rock, she saw a white wolf who was standing there looking at her.Their eyes met. That was a strange connection.Human and animal but somehow his look contained emotions. Sadness, loneliness, anger... and she felt every single one of them.
That shook her moving her deeply. How can animal eyes contain those feelings? How can wolf feel anything similar to a human? A lot of questions buzzed in her head until the wolf sensed her scent then turned his head and disappear somewhere in the woods leaving Taima breathless.
She was still kneeling in the snow, holding deer but this unexpected meeting left a big impact on her. Standing up slowly, she went for her sled. With skilled moves put the deer on it and secure with tight knots. The dogs were quietly growling sensing that wolf was near but none of them barked.
