How It All Began - Part 1

"Darius McConnor" was graved on a metal plate placed on his desk. Perfectly fitted gray suit, white shirt with black tie. On the right hand a golden ring on his little finger. All screamed power, success, and money. He was the top lawyer, the one who never lost any case, the one from whom everybody was fearing to meet up in a court.

And all that started three years ago when his best client Demian Smith walked into his office wanting to hire him. That case was all he ever wanted. That case was so big and complicated but he saw his opportunity right there in front of him and nothing could've stopped him from taking his rightful place in this world with the cruel competition.

Demian Smith was the CEO of one of the biggest oil companies in the world but some suspicious malversations were discovered by his former employee who wanted to reveal them to the rest of the world.

Forcefully taken land, bad or non-healthy precautions to his workers, pollution of an environment and water, money laundering, was only the tip of the iceberg from all what his company did. Many people gathered in one lawsuit against that company demanding justice, but Darius manages it get rid one by one finding holes in their stories, lack of evidence, bad credibility of witnesses. He did it all. It took all of his strength and time it took even his health but he did it! He won that battle and the oil company CEO was proclaimed not guilty of all charges. Of course, somebody had to took that blame and it was the same man who started all that.

Darius laughed for himself. Yes, he did some dirty moves here and there but that is life and if you want to win you have to play dirty or others will crush you.

His life was perfect. The reputation he got after that helped him to make a fortune just by defending his rich clients.

His eyes searched for the photo in a golden frame placed on the left side of his desk. A beautiful sight of his beloved YaeJin greeted him. Her pretty face with soft features and almond eyes meant a world to him. She was the only person he ever cared about and all he did, and still does was only for her. He wanted to give her world. He wanted to put his heart and everything he had in front of her, that is how much he loved her.

A barely visible smile appeared on the corner of his lips but quickly he straightens his face hiding his weakness in front of his client.

Today Demina Smith came to him again with a tempting proposition. He offered him a secured position in his company with an impressive number of shares and the full power of making decisions.

-I want you to withdraw from this business and pay more attention to my personal life and I thought you could be the perfect person who can replace me.

Darius was surprised with that offer. He would've never dreamed about taking such a high position. His hands were shaking from the excitement just by thinking about it, so he hid them under the table. His heart pumped so fast of the adrenalin coming from the thought of the amount of power he could have by taking that position.

He didn't think too much about it, what was there to think anyway? Finally, he could have the world he craved for so much and place it all in front of YaeJin asking her to marry him.

A few months went by and he lived hectic life like he was sucked in a huge swirl of the unknown. The only thing that helped him the most was that he was a fast learner. Demian was his guide and his mentor. He learned that his cruelness was necessary and avoidable. Maybe if he had time to think more about his decisions, he would notice how wrong and wicked they were. But sweet taste of the power was so enchanting lifting his ego up high and Demian just added more and more until he was choking from bliss. He never looked carefully in that man's eyes to notice black shade, the glitter they got looking at him, the depth in them filled with the satisfaction of an evil laughter watching his foolish happiness. He was drunk and fed up of his own success so it made him blind and deaf for everything surrounding him.
