the crunching of leaves, far away laughter, and deep, unsteady breaths filled the thick air. his breath came out in clouds, blending in with the slight fog that filled the nippy april air. eyes stared straight down, eyeing his shiny shoes that dirt tried to cling to as he went on walking, as if time didn't even exist.
spring break was on the peak of ending and his homework was long forgotten, crumpled down in his messy book bag, along with half read books, and notes he meant to gift to someone around december. his locker was probably collecting dust and the school dull, useless without students.
a deep groan snapped him from his thoughts, "mum said to be back by five, chance. how the hell am i suppose to convince her we were kidnapped, but given back due to obnoxious comments and hunger begs?" his brother asked, flipping his long brown hair out of his hazel eyes.
chance bit at his tongue, something everyone would scowl him for. "maybe if levi and you-" he was stopped right there by his ever so lovely 'put my two sense in' brother.
"oi, you were the one with googly eyes, thinking you're slick. i'm not an idiot, like you think," connor shouted, kicking the dirt under his shoes. the house was showing down the road, inviting the boys in to receive their mum's wrath.
a slight pink color shown on chance's light caramel skin and he ignored the comment his older brother made, too embarrassed by the ugly truth.
it was quite obvious that chance had this gross, school boy crush on his older brothers friend. he felt disgusted, feeding into others trap of liking their older siblings friends. his feet hit the hard road as the sun started to fall and the stars were blinking, trying to take over the night.
his brother ran past the driveway, following up the four steps until making it to the front door. it swung open, his mother appearing in the doorway, arms crossed with irritation. "two rules. two. and you broke them," she said calmly, surprising them.
"well yeah-"
"levi and connor were-"
"- we know about rules, of course mum."
"- playing video games even when i said stop!"
her hands went up, stopping them from overlapping each others words. "be home before five or before the street lights are on. let's take a nice look out there," she pointed towards the road. "what is that you see?"
"the street lights," they said in unison.
"the street lights," she repeated. "no games for a month or cleaning the whole house all weekend, you pick," their mom said, walking away from them with a roll of the eyes.
connor and chance walked into the house, shutting and locking the door behind them. quickly, they both ran upstairs, arguing about their punishment all the way to chance's room.
"dude, no video games for a month, easy," chance grinned, jumping down onto his bed.
"are you stupid? mum has clearly drawn out an open door for us, man. clean the house, simple. no games for a month, unacceptable. i refuse to be kept from my love, my passion, my wife," connor raised a fist in the air, almost shouting 'justice,' but was stopped by his seventeen year old brother.
"get a job and a girlfriend, it's nasty to see this. get out my room and get ready for some cleaning tomorrow," he pointed towards the door, following with his brothers plan since he had nothing better to do anyway.
connor eyed the pile of clothes on the floor, "no way, she put those there last night!" he exclaimed, throwing his skinny arms in the air.
"this is the last thing we need to do, stop being a baby. you're eighteen, not five," chance rolled his eyes, fixing the laundry detergent around, organizing them in color order. levi's head peeked in, looking into the room the two boys were in.
