kylie didn't quite understand the four letter word for desperately wanting someone by your side, while hopelessly falling limp under their words as if not having such a thing as a brain.

if anything, kylie could easily say she'd pass on love. yet, her heart swelled, skipped a few beats, and she felt her stomach toss, as if having to throw up rainbows when she looked at carter, her best friend.

carter was three years younger than her, but was overly mature for being twenty one. it was mostly because she has a three year old daughter that kept her on her feet.

after a drunken affair a few years back, carter matured and devoted her time to her job, daughter, and kylie. they lived in an apartment together in new york, struggling, but loving their lives.

it seemed as through kylie was the younger one at times, always following in carter's lead. she sat on the couch as carter set the table, thoughts still roaming and her hands running through teddy's hair.

"stop thinking!" carter yelled from the kitchen, a few dishes crashing to the ground.

"i have no idea what you're taking about, messy," kylie replied, rolling her eyes as she stood up with teddy in her arms.

"mommy's a mess," she giggled, wrapping her arms around kylie's neck. kylie grinned, nuzzling her head in the little girls hair.

"she sure is, bear," she whispered, making her way to the small kitchen. "what did i tell you about dropping the dishes," she sternly said, setting teddy down.

carter crossed her arms, "it wasn't my fault this time, bit-" she cut herself off, flailing her arms in the air. "whatever, lily, i'm not arguing with you tonight, because i actually like my food in my mouth, not on my face."

kylie scrunched her face up, "two times," she said, sitting her a chair. "i only did that too times."

"actually four," teddy commented as carter set her in the high chair.

"i didn't ask," kylie said, pointing at her.

"mama, shush."

kylie huffed and listened to teddy, always feeling soft when the girl spoke. she supposed being called 'mama,' wouldn't surprise her anymore, but it did and carter still smiled gently at that fact.

through dinner, kylie felt her heart warm more when carter helped teddy with her spaghetti and she talked about work and- well any of carter's actions and words made kylie burn with.. with lo- like.

love wasn't real and that word was too absurd to use or think about. in fact, kylie could say that her feelings for carter were only a best friend thing that everyone experienced.

because kylie marie reynolds did not believe in love or any such fairytale cliche.

teddy shook her from her thoughts, pointing at the tv. "watch?" she asked.

kylie's eyes widened, "oh shit, sorry bear, i should've been paying attention," she groaned, petting teddy's long blonde hair.

"language," carter piped up from next to teddy, who was in the middle of them. "watch your got dang language, b-word," she said, biting her lip, trying not to smile.

with a furry of her eyebrows, kylie looked carter in her bright blue eyes, "shush you f-ing a-word, mother-trucker," she replied back, watching carter giggle at her words.

she flipped her short brown hair away from her face and smiled at original ol' brown eye, brown haired kylie. "better," she nodded.

"i suppose," kylie agreed, eyeing teddy with a small smile. her eyes were slightly closing, her head jolting up when she dowsed off. it made her heart swell with something, so she decided to pull teddy closer, wrapping her arm around her waist.

"no," teddy groaned, realizing she was falling asleep.

"hush, bear," she whispered, kissing her cheek. she didn't notice carter staring at her as she sung teddy to sleep or the love forming in her eyes.

"you're good at that," carter muttered, resting her head on her hand.

"been doing it for awhile," kylie shrugged, looking over at her best friend. God, she was something special.

so beautiful and kind.

"i never said it before, but i'm so appreciative of you. ya know, you didn't have to stay around and help with teddy, you could've left.. but you didn't leave me, even at my dumb low moment," carter sighed, reaching her right arm over to grab kylie's hand.

"i wasn't gonna leave, car, never," she reassured.

carter smiled, delicately squeezing kylie's hand. "of course you wouldn't have, but you could've and that's what matters."

"listen, i know it doesn't always seem like it, but you mean so much to me. i-i enjoy teddy and i'm always going to be your best friend, even if you hate me for.. for something i need to say," kylie looked down at sleeping teddy, making sure she wasn't peeping.

"what?" asked carter, curiously leaning in. "what could ever make me hate you?"

kylie brought carter's hand to her lips, pressing a small kiss to her knuckles. "i.."

"what, lily?"

"well, i.. listen, meeting you was fate for me, ya know? you saved me and i learned how to care for another person, instead of hating everyone.. i just- i lo- i lo-" she shut her mouth, groaning in frustration.

why couldn't she put her past aside and just feel.. feelings?

carter bit her lip, "you heart me?"

kylie looked up, staring into carter's eyes. she nodded, a smile slowly spreading to her face. "i heart you. i heart the fuck outta you."

"kylie!" carter whisper-yelled, hitting her hand. "you heart the 'f,' outta me."

the older girl started laughing loudly, not being able to help herself. teddy stirred and carter smacked her hand over kylie's mouth. and that's what kylie liked or 'hearted,' about the younger girl.

even though she basically said she loved her and shown her feelings through her brown eyes, carter could make her laugh. she could make the world turn upside down and world peace be a thing.

that was carter. a loving, caring, dumb, young mother with a heart of gold. that's why kylie 'hearted' the 'f' outta her so much.
