17. Conflict

Working under pressure is hard. Mainly because none of them had actually done such strenuous work in such a small period of time. But luckily they all knew what to do to disable their own inventions.

Adrian would assist them here and there tweaking stuff, providing them with their materials.

It was almost enjoyable. To have such amazing facilities to use, all of their materials just presented to them on a plate. They were surrounded by scientists like themselves all aspiring to make major breakthroughs.
But they couldn't be distracted. Eventually they had completed their defense system.

It was basically like a gun. Like a revolver almost. But twice the size.
The EMP "shooter" was mounted on top with it's energy harnesser to the sides making it look like a small jet.
Chris had his "barb-dart" mounted underneath.

They were ready for Marcus. They just had to enable Nick's tracking system to find the wheels. Aliyah was amazed that Marcus let Nick install this tracker.

Nick smiled and said he just wanted to test the efficiency of the wheels and to monitor them during the testing. He disabled the tracker after the testing. Luckily for them they could activate it within a 2000km radius. They just hoped Marcus would be in this radius.

They were ready.

Nick took a deep breath and started up his device. For a moment it hummed to life, searching for a signal. Then it beeped. They all jumped in surprise. A range of red letters and numbers started filling the screen. None of them understood what they meant so they all waited for Nick.

"So? What does it say buddy?" asked Chris patiently.

To their surprise (again) he switched the thing off. Jean looked furious. "What did you do that for?? The thing worked didn't it?"

Nick looked at the group. "I don't think so no. According to this it says he is in the building next to CERN. 190m away from us to be precise."

The group was speechless. Adrian made an executive decision and said that they were all going to investigate "It can't hurt can it?"

None of them protested to this. They didn't expect to be meeting their ex-captor so soon and was almost dreading the fact.
Slowly they packed up their defense system and started to make their way near the building

The plan that they had set out was one that would avoid conflict. They could just stay away from the building which would be much better. No blood. Just attack the rover.

They arrived at the building where the rover and presumably Marcus was. The building was a conference building. They struggled to get in because there was a lot of paparazzi outside the building. No one knew why.

Then an attendant gave them the answer. The USA president was coming to give a live stream talk about their ideas about modern army tactics. More than 100 countries would be live streaming it from the comfort of their own officers.

She proceeded to explain that this conference was held in one of their UN conference buildings. This was the whole reason the conference was held in Geneva.

Suddenly like a puzzle Marcus's whole plot came together for Jean. "He's going to assinate the president. He needed the wheels to get around the rough terrain of the country. The bullets to get through tight spaces and the camera to either guide the bulets or to broadcast the whole thing. He is a terrorist!"

All of them were amazed. What an intricate device for such a task. Adrenaline filled Chris. He had to stop Marcus! Quickly he pushed his way into the building. He found himself in a massive hall decorated lavishly with flowers, streamers across the whole width and tables decorated with food and silver cutlery.

He had to find a good place to set uo the defense in anticipation for the rover. He decided to hide behind the dustbin area in one of the back corners. Then Jean and nick located him and set up their parts of the defense. Then they waited. And waited...

15 minutes. 30 minutes. (The speech had started. 1 hour. The speech was almost done when Nick gasped. "The rover is coming he said."

They all readied themselves for the rover; the EMP and the dart ready. With a bang the rover entered the hall. It turned 360 degrees, surveiling the area. Luckily it didn't seem to notice them.

Screams filled the air as guests ran out. Bullets were shot at the secret service agents. The president was then exposed. Quickly an EMP was shot out which disabled the camera. Chris was too slow to act and before he could fire a dart at the rover three shadowy figures entered the hall. They had guns pointed at the three who were exposed as well by the whole commotion.

Marcus walked in and with his silky voice spoke "Chris. Jean. Nick. I am so disappointed that this happened."

He was cut short by Leela firing a shot near the president who had tried to run away.
"Thank you love" he said which made Chris gag. She threw Marcus a smile and walked next to the other figure.

All attention was back on Marcus "Tut tut tut boys. You could've had amazing, quiet lives... but no. You defied my orders. Oh well you'll pay with your lives, as I promised."

His face made Nick and Jean sick to the stomach.

"But on to my plan. Leela! Keep these three in check. I have to set up the camera. And my associate will get the rover ready"
Chris couldn't help look at the other figure. He couldn't help wonder who he was...

Marcus looked at him and barked "Jase!! Get ready."

Chris couldn't describe what he was feeling. Happiness? Horror?
One thing was for sure. He was in shock. Utter shock.

He was broken out of his temporary lapse of brain waves when Jase obeyed Marcus. Chris then screamed at Jase "No! Don't do it Jase! Please . I know you won't do this. Just stop. Please Jase"
Chris began to sob. Marcus rolled his eyes and spoke up

"Chris. Jase is on my side...."
A loud rustling broke his sentence.
This was caused by the president who had tried to escape once again but was stopped by Marcus's gun being pointed at him. No words were needed.

"Come come Jase. Camera is ready. Soon the whole world will see how the North Koreans assassinated the president. "

Chris saw the flag and realisation struck him. Marcus wanted to start WW3. He tried to protest and object but was struck by Jase in the jaw. "Quiet!" he bellowed with a raspy voice.

The next few minutes were hard to watch. Everything was ready and the camera started to roll. The rover moved closer and closer to the president who was frozen in shock.

Suddenly a loud bang rang in the hall. Jase lay on the floor, gun clutched in his had next to the rover remote. The president had fainted from the sound. The rover lay there, a massive hole was in the middle of it. Chris turned his head to his colleagues and saw Leela at the controls of the defense. They had won. The rover was disabled.

Marcus shouted in anguish and raised his gun at Leela. Jase then rose up and shot Marcus who then collapsed. Jase fainted. Chris then fainted. Everyone fainted.
