(A/N: This one is going to be for Demi Lovato's "Heart Attack". Please leave suggestions for fandoms, songs or characters :))
My first day as an Avenger. How did I manage to rope myself into this? Oh, yeah...letting it slip to Tony effing Stark that I had abilities. Because I needed anyone to know I could manipulate the earth. As in, the ground. I could move rocks. But somehow Stark decided that I would be useful to the great and mighty Avenger cause, so he dragged me in.
After politely escorting me to my new room, the billionaire gave me a tour of the facility and introduced me to the team. Like I needed introduced to the intergalactic cheer squad. I waved hellos and kept on my way.
It wasn't even a week before I was sent on my first mission. Eradicate a leftover Hydra base in Switzerland. How they managed to stash one there was beyond me...but hey, whatever. I went with Widow, Hawkeye, Cap and Iron Man, which seemed a bit overkill to me. When we got there, of course the Hydra agents were out there, shooting at us. I found a few stray boulders and chucked them at the larger guns so that the others could focus on the smaller gunmen. Cap stood next to me, throwing his shield at a few guys as well.
"Really, dude, I got this."
"I'm sure you do, Miss (Y/N), but I never leave a lady to fight on her own."
"Look, Cap...I'm no damsel in distr---". I lost my focus just long enough to catch a stray bullet in my leg. I threw a rather large rock at whomever shot me, then fell to my knees. "Damnit."
Cap walked over to me and held out an arm to help me up and I swatted it away. "You're injured, (Y/n), at least let me help."
I gave him a glare as I pushed myself on my good leg, resting my arm on a nearby rock. "I'm good." I limped over to the quinjet as the rest of the group finished off the last few agents and blew up the base.
Back at the tower, I pulled my leg up on the exam table to have the bullet removed and get stitched. Once I was cleaned up and taken care of, I limped to my room, passing Steve on my way.
"(Y/n), are you alright? Let me help you." He grabbed for my waist as I leaned on the wall and I pushed him away again. "Seriously...what is wrong?"
"I'm good." I finished my labored stumble to my door, finally collapsing on my bed. "Geez." My face finally lost the flush it had started getting when I was near Steve. I laid in my bed and watched (F/s) on the tv before passing out from exhaustion.
The next morning, I heard a knock on my door. Natasha was on the other side, holding a plate of bacon and eggs. "Steve thought you may want something to eat and since you're slightly incapacitated, he asked me to bring this."
I took the plate and looked up at Nat. "Thanks."
"He likes you, you know."
"Yeah...I've heard that before. He'll like me til something better comes along."
"You obviously don't know Steve very well..." and with that, Nat left me to muse over my breakfast. I sat at my desk, eating and thinking over what she'd said. Ok...so he was attractive. But I was so...not his type. I drink, I hook up, I have fun. And I don't. Fall. In love.
I assumed I'd have to squash this before it got out of control. I felt like I could put a bit of weight on my leg, so I made my way to the kitchen with my dirty plate. Steve was there, cleaning the dishes from everyone's breakfast so I slipped my own into the sink. "Thanks for the eggs."
Steve looked at me with a slight smile. "Not a problem, ma'am." He dried his hands and turned toward me. "I want to apologize if you thought I was stepping out of bounds, (Y/n). But I, well, I'm intrigued by you to say the least."
I rested my arm on the counter. "It's ok. But I need to tell you this. I'm not about to start depending on some man just cuz he's the high and mighty Captain America, k? Think of me...like Tony. I'm bad, fast, and hard to handle." Turning away, I walked out of the kitchen and back to my room.
I decided to use the free afternoon to clean up my room, so I put some cheesy pop music on my speakers and hobbled around as I picked up laundry, made my bed, and rearranged my DVD collection for the billionth time. A little bullet wound wasn't going to keep me down, that's for sure. I sang along to Demi Lovato as she expressed the desire to change for some guy...while I personally considered that bull crap, the music was catchy.
Never break a sweat for the other guys
But when you come around I get paralyzed
And every time I try to be myself
It comes out wrong, like a cry for help
It's just not fair, pain's more trouble than love is worth
I gasp for air, it feels so good but you know it hurts
But you make me wanna act like a girl
Paint my nails and wear perfume for you
Make me so nervous, and I just can't hold your handWhat I didn't realize that while I was belting the chorus, Steve was walking up to my door.
You make me glow
But I'll cover up, won't let it show
So I'm putting my defenses up
Cuz I don't wanna fall in love
If I ever did that, I think I'd have a heart attack...I was brought out of my one-woman concert by a knock. I opened it to find Steve on the other side. Holding a single rose.
I swear Clint would have heard my eyes rolling.
"Can I help you, Mr. Rogers?"
He held the flower out to me, and I reluctantly accepted it. "Forgive me, (Y/n), but I believe you may have misunderstood my intentions. I know you've only been part of the team for a week or so, but I've a hard time believing you're anything like Stark. I think you maybe...just haven't met the right fella." His face started getting a little flushed and he looked at the floor. "If you don't mind, I'd like an opportunity to treat you the way a pretty lady should be. I mean, like dinner."
I mulled over the idea for a moment. I mean, it was just a date, not a week in Oahu, right? "Alright, Captain, if you insist. I'll be ready at 7."
Several hours later, Steve knocked on my door. I opened it, wearing a simple flowered sundress and sandals. He was in a button-down shirt and khakis and dare I think, quite handsome. He held an arm for me, and I took it, if only for support of my bum leg.
He took me to a small trattoria that had a great view of the river and skyline. When he wasn't all spangled up, Steve was quite the conversationalist. We talked about growing up, his time in the Army, anything we could think of. When we finally arrived back at the Tower, he was polite enough to walk me to my room.
"I had a nice time, Steve. Thanks." I turned to open the door, then looked up at him, almost hoping he wouldn't be the polite soldier.
"I did too, (Y/n)." His hand brushed my cheek and he leaned in toward me. "I hope I'm not being too forward, but may I kiss you?"
"Sure." I stood on my tiptoes to meet his lips. He gave me a gentle kiss before pulling away. "Is everything ok, Steve?"
He smiled a bit, then kissed my forehead. "Yeah. I was just thinking of that song you were singing this morning and wondering if you may be like the girl singing it."
I turned red. "You heard that?"
He laughed. "A little. But maybe it's time you had that heart attack." He pulled me up for another kiss, more intense this time. My head was spinning when he finally let me go to turn in for the night. "Goodnight, (Y/n). See you in the morning."
He treated me like a lady from then on. Flowers, dates, all of the cutesy stuff I'd never gotten before. I even let him help me on missions. Sometimes.
