Chapter 7

"The Vashta what?" Anna was worried by the look on his face. When did he get so scary?

"The Vashta Nerada. They're a species that live in forests, in the shadows, feeding off dead animals mostly, road kill, that sort of thing. But occasionally, they get vicious."

Anna caught her breath.

"Vicious how?"

"Think of it this way," he said, turning towards her. "Piranhas, that live in the air, and eat people."

Anna just stared at him blankly. Piranhas? In the air?

"Anna, almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark, and I can tell you one thing, it's not irrational. It's Vashta Nerada."

"So these, Vashta things eat people?"

"Most of the time no. But sometimes they get hungry and might pick off someone who strayed too far into the shadows. I've only met them this vicious once before..." He trailed off and Anna could swear that she could almost hear his brain ticking away like a clock.

"We need to get back to the TARDIS." He said. Anna was shocked.

"B-but, what about the people here? What about Saleem?" Anna stammered out. Surely they couldn't leave him here? It wasn't right!

"Anna it's not safe here. You need to get back to the TARDIS. She'll keep you safe while I sort this out."

"No."

"Anna-"

"No Doctor." Anna was trying to act tough. Her voice was wavering and she could feel her knees shaking a little. This was a big step for her. Normally she would cower down and just do as she was told by a teacher. But then the Doctor was no teacher.

He walked up to her, put his hands onto her shoulders and looked into her eyes. His voice was sad.

"Anna, I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry. But I can't have you getting hurt." He then placed his hands on the side of her head and Anna blacked out.

A/N Hey, I'm sorry it's a short chapter. Now I need your opinion, should Anna be able to help defeat the Vashta Nerada? How are we going to defeat them this time? Should the Doctor let her help?
