Chapter 8

Anna felt like her head was full of cotton wool. She could hear a mechanical humming and opened her eyes when she remembered where she was.

She sat straight up and the Doctor's long trenchcoat fell off her. She had been sleeping on the Jumpseat next to to the console. She got up and tried to clear her head by shaking it. It didn't do much but it helped her regain a bit of focus. The Doctor was out there, so was Saleem, against the.. what was it the Doctor had said? Vashta Nerada? She ran to the door only to find it locked.

"Oh come on." She muttered to herself. She walked back to the console in the centre of the room and pushed a few buttons. Which one had the Doctor pressed to close the doors before? She randomly flicked some switches when the TARDIS seemed to moan. Anna jumped back in surprise. Was it, alive? She decided to try talk to it.

"Hey, err.. TARDIS" she felt completely stupid. "Could you open the doors please?" Nothing happened. "Look, I think the Doctor needs my help and i need to get out there." Still nothing. Anna was glad that there was no one else in the room. This was almost embarrasing. "That's a different planet out there, the Doctor brought me along to see it and i've only spent like, 10 minutes there. If a different planet means helping out, then I want to help. I think i've had enough of leaving it to someone else." Anna waited, then she heard something behind her.

A rucksack had appeared on the jump seat. She opened it and looked at what was inside. There were several torches with extra batteries, a weird mechanical thing, a lunch box with some chicken drumsticks? And then Anna found something that amazed her. A key, on a chain. It must be the TARDIS key! She ran over to the door and tried it. It worked! the door opened and she looked out. The colours of the wildlife were somehow dimmer than she remembered. The purple light from the ground was no longer bright enough to reflect off her body. Through some strange instinct, she knew what she had to do.

She placed the key around her neck and pulled the rucksack on. She looked back at the Dcotor's coat. To hell with it. Anna put on the coat even though it was several sizes too big and then put the bag back on after taking out a torch. She ran out the doors, locking them behind her and then ran towards the town, her torch lighting the way.
