By the end of the week, the house was looking more like a home. We'd finished just about every room, except my dad, who still working on his "special project." We went out to celebrate at a local steak house.
For a Friday night, it was pretty much dead. Well, my perspective of dead anyway. If we had been back home, the line would have been out the door on a Friday night. Instead we waited for a table for about two seconds. The smell of smoked meat tickled my nose as we sat down. It had been awhile since we sat down to be pampered at a resturant. We talked about everything and nothing while eating.
"So are you excited for the new school year. School starts in two weeks." He just had to remind me of my impending doom.
I looked up at my father through eyeglasses that I sometimes wore. "If you are asking me if I'm excited about making new friends, then the answer is no. I don't want new friends, I want my old ones back." My steak and fries was suddenly not as appealing.
They both looked at one another a long while before speaking. "Abby, look. We know you are mad at us okay. But there is something we have to tell you about. We didn't only move because of my job, actually we would have moved regardless. That old place just didn't have enough space."
"What? There was plenty of space. There was only three of us living in the place! And if there wasn't enough space why'd you move from a two story to a one story? Try a different excuse."
My father took my mother's hand in his. "Abs, honey. Your mom...she's uh-"
"We're having a baby!" My mom's eyes beamed.
Have you ever seen someone do a spit take? Yeah well, I so just did one. "What?! You guys cannot be having another kid! You're too old!"
"We wanted to tell you sooner, but we didn't want to put it on top of the move." My dad said anxiously.
Unbelievable! So, I had to leave my best friends and my home all because they were having some stupid baby! What is with them! "Dad! You're like 50!"
He cut his eyes. "I'm only Forty-three."
"Are you mad hun?" My mom took a shaky bite of her salad.
"Mad?! Are you kidding? No i'm not mad. Of course I wanted a stupid baby to come and ruin my life some more! Hell, we moved because of that thing!"
My mom's eye looked hurt, but I had no intentions on taking back what I said. For 17 years, I've been an only child, now they are telling me I'm going to be a big sister? And to add on to it, they moved me to Arizona. ARIZONA? Really? It seemed like they didn't even care to consult me in any of the huge decisions they made now. They were my best friends! We did everything together. Call me a brat if you want to, but I am there center, I am their everything, not some dumb ass baby.
"Abby, t-take that back. How could you say something like that to your mother?" My dad looked at me with disappointed eyes.
I wiped a stupid tear and stood up. "So I'm the bad guy huh? Well fine! I'll walk home. You guys can go and do everything on your own like you already do!" I didn't know where I was going, but I sure as hell was not staying here.
