I don't remember sleeping again, but I awaken when the door to our house opens and closes.
"Did you guys sleep all morning? It's noon!" Garnet yells from the front.
"No! I let Fyre sleep in. And it's easier to face Immortals at noon when they're weakest." Phoenix yells from what I think is the kitchen.
I sit up and groan.
"You guys are loud!" I yell. Laughter is the only reply I get. I crawl out of the bed and make my way to the kitchen. There are plates of cooked meat and potatoes on the table. Aka, last night's leftovers.
"Sit and eat." Phoenix says to me.
I do as I'm told, listening to the report from Garnet as I eat a thick, barely cooked steak.
"Monto came with me peacefully. The monks are currently going through his memories to prove he was at the attacks. So far, so good."
"Did you get that letter to Aspen?" I ask between bites.
Garnet nods.
"He already replied. He has guards posted everywhere. We have no clue who is participating. And they'll be dressed as Muz. So he may still be attacked."
I shook my head.
"Hurry, Fyre. We have to leave in a moment."
I nodded and scarfed down the rest of the steak. Phoenix could make leftovers taste amazing.
After I finished eating, Garnet wished us luck. We said our goodbyes, then Phoenix and I made our way out of the house.
"Are we walking?" I asked. He shook his head.
"Nah. I suppose it's time to see if you can teleport."
I grinned. Oh hell yes.
"So grab my arm." I did, squeezing. I hadn't seen Phoenix work out, but he was ripped. I liked.
"Now imagine a crystal clear lake completely surrounded by mountaintops. That's where we're going."
"Okay."
"Make a fireball."
I did so.
"Now throw it at our feet, while imagining that lake."
I did but did not feel the pull and the pop I did with Phoenix. I tried not to frown.
"No worries, Fyre. It may still come to you."
He grabbed my waist and threw a fireball at the ground. With a pull and a pop, we were standing next to a beautiful lake.
"Can we swim up here?" I asked, staring at the water.
Phoenix chuckled.
"Maybe tomorrow. If we're still alive."
I bunched my brows. Why would we die?
"Immortals don't like visitors." He said, reading my thoughts. The air up here was nice and warm. I wanted to strip and feel the sunshine on every pore of my skin.
"Follow me."
Phoenix began walking to a path between two mountaintops. It went further up into the mountains and seemed hidden in shadow.
"Why didn't we just teleport to where they live?" I asked.
"I haven't been out here since I was 13. You gotta at least have an idea of where you're going. Dad brought me out here to meet the coven leader, but I don't remember her. I just know her name is Naomi."
"Was it nice?"
He shook his head.
"She was very threatening. I mean. She had fucking fangs, man."
My dream from last night popped into my head. The woman with fangs.
"Immortals are scary as hell." He said. "You should see them fight one day."
"Is it that cool?" I asked.
"Oh hell yeah. They have so many kinds of magic. Blood magic, lightning magic, weather magic. And man I remember this one man who could fight with duel swords. I think he said it was a long-lost form of fighting."
I laughed.
"You can remember all that but not Naomi?"
He shrugged.
"I was 13 and learning how to sword fight. It was all that mattered to me."
I shook my head as we walked deeper into the mountain.
"So how do you know where we're going?"
"Just following the shadows. That's how they are able to come out during the day. They have a mage who will create shadows. Just keep your nose to the wind. You'll know when we find them."
We kept walking, no longer talking. I took deep breaths every few minutes. There was nothing to set me on edge.
After a while, the shadows became denser. I began to see through Wolf's eyes.
The next thing that changed was the smell. Everything began to smell cold. It set me on edge.
Phoenix growled, low and warning. I looked at where he had locked eyes with a tall man. He had dark hair and blood red eyes. They were like mine, but lighter. He wore loose fitting clothes, and he was handsome. I mean very handsome. It was almost calming.
"Who are you?" The man asked, nonchalantly.
"I am Fyre, and this is Clan Leader Phoenix. We've come to talk with Naomi."
"Won't you make a tasty snack." The man said, appearing behind me. He bared his fangs and drug them across my neck. Phoenix turned towards him and bared his teeth. I held my palm out to him. It's okay, I wanted to say.
"Don't worry, Phoenix." The man said. "I'll treat her well. All she'll remember is how amazing the sex was."
Phoenix didn't back down.
"Taven!" Yelled a small woman down the path. "We don't play with our food."
Taven chuckled.
"I suppose you're right, Marie."
The woman took a step and was suddenly in front of me. Wolf bucked. An unknown enemy had blocked our visual to our mate. It was time to run.
Marie ran a hand under my chin.
"What's your name, Cutie?"
"Fyre." I responded. I turned my head to see Phoenix standing at her side. Good. Seeing him calmed me.
Marie glanced towards Phoenix.
"You smell like him. Y'all together?"
I swallowed and nodded.
"What a shame. You look like you're fun in bed."
Taven laid his hands on my shoulders.
"That just means she's straight. And mine."
"You need to get her hands off of her." Phoenix growled at him. Marie smirked and backstepped. That left me between Taven and Phoenix.
"Back down, dog." Taven said. Phoenix closed the gap between us and shoved me behind him.
"Not a chance in the world."
I glanced towards Marie and noticed how beautiful she was. Short brown hair and the same red eyes as Taven. She was short too, almost a whole foot below my 5'5". She glanced back at me and rolled her eyes.
"That's enough, Taven." She said, stepping between the two men.
"Why did you say you were here?" She asked me.
"We need to speak with Naomi." I said, hugging Phoenix's arm. He sidestepped so he was in front of me.
"Then let us take you to her."
The two Immortals began walking back towards the dense shadows. Phoenix and I followed wearily, refusing to let go of each other. I was a little freaked out, but I could smell anger pouring off of Phoenix. I wondered how he'd act if Garnet had come instead.
We followed the Immortals to an opening in the rock walls. A large oak door in the side of the mountain.
"One moment." Taven said, making sure to flash his fangs. Phoenix gripped me a little tighter.
Both Immortals disappeared behind the door. We heard rustling, and a feminine voice asking what had happened.
The door squeaked open, and I nearly felt my jaw drop at the woman who stood behind it.
