"Rose?" The knocks grew louder on the stall door. Nari's voice was loud as she grew impatient with me not answering. I stood up shakily and slowly, holding the wall for support as I felt the world spinning. I must have vomited several times after that. It felt like it had been hours, but had only been several minutes. I made a shaky sigh as the toilet automatically flushed, causing Nari to become louder.
"Are you okay? We're worried about you, it's been almost ten minutes!" She exclaimed and knocked again. Her fist was stopped mid-air as I opened the door and faced her with tear-stained cheeks and a deep frown as my legs shook from beneath me. Without a word, she pulled me into a hug as Eunyeong came blasting through the door. The sound of music grew before fading once again as it shut behind her.
Nari rubbed my back to comfort me as I cried into her shoulder. Due to the silence, I knew her and Eunyeong were exchanging mutual glances of confusion. I removed myself from her body and made my way to the sink, rinsing off my hands and splashing water on my mouth to clean it. I looked at my reflection, wiping away the watery dark line under my eyes from the mascara that ran.
Eunyeong ran to my side to silently pass me a breath spray and then a mint. I gratefully accepted them. My body flinched back as I sprayed the cool, minty liquid onto my tongue. I was just thankful that it neutralized the taste of bile in my throat. Popping the mint into my mouth, I continued to make it look like I hadn't cried at all, fishing the makeup pouch from my bag and slowly applying a new coat of mascara.
The silence lingered as I could see Eunyeong and Nari standing behind me, staring at my frazzled reflection in the mirror without a word. I decided to break the silence while applying a coat of lipgloss that had been wiped off for obvious reasons.
"I ate too fast." I spoke up. My voice was still shaky, but I was able to control it enough to make it not worrisome. Sure, I was lying. But I couldn't tell my best friends that I reached the lowest point in my life. The point where even the thought of food that would make me gain even half a pound would make me want to vomit. I watched the two nod silently, but the expressions on their faces became more relaxed and relieved.
Shoving everything back into my small white purse, I turned to face them with a playful smile.
"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go dance." I said cheerfully. I knew that would get their mind off of it. They leaped around happily before squealing and running out. I followed behind at my own pace, opening the door. The loud music took me aback again but I maintained the strength to carry myself to the dining area, fearful that Jungkook had left my pathetic self.
Much to my surprise, there he sat. The table was empty as he leaned back in his chair and looked forward with a straight face. Jimin was at his side trying to talk to him with a wide grin, shaking his arm every now and then. He froze as soon as he saw me approach the table again. Jungkook was quick to glance over, the small smile playing on his lips was enough to relax my tense muscles for what felt like the hundredth time tonight.
"I'm sorry, I had to fix my makeup." I lied. I slowly sat back down and watched as Jimin gave me a long stare before standing up and shuffling away quickly. "Here."
I rustled through my purse before pulling out my wallet and handing him the amount of my food, plus a few dollars for the inconvenience of it being flushed down a toilet only minutes afterward.
He shoved my hand away, my eyes widened.
"Keep it. I wanted to pay for it anyway." He said, making me let out a small laugh after a second of shock. I slid the money back into my wallet.
"Such a gentleman." I cooed as I slung my purse back over my shoulder. His grin beamed at me happily as he slowly stood, his hand outstretched, his orbs staring down at me and glistening.
"Let's dance." He spoke with a large grin on his face. I slowly and hesitantly placed my smaller hand in his larger one as I slowly stood up from my spot. The height difference was slightly less prominent due to my heels, and I felt happier. I hated being so short. I knew he must like tall girls. I was not tall.
He led me to the crowded and loud dance floor. Finally, a place where not all eyes would be on us. In this moment, there was no social hierarchy of high school. It was just two more meaningless bodies having fun on the dance floor.
I didn't know how to dance as well as he did. I watched as he made up his dance moves, my hands over my mouth as I laughed, my eyes squinting in a bright eye smile as I watched the overdressed boy do the floss in front of me. I clapped my hands, even if he couldn't hear them as well.
He suddenly grabbed my hands and twisted my body to the music before quickly spinning me, using my arms to make me dance with him to the upbeat trap music playing from the DJ's station. My laughter was drowned out by the speakers. My heart raced and fluttered as I saw Jungkook the happiest that I had witnessed from him ever. His mouth was wide open from his smile, his eyes almost shut from how squinted they were from the bright, bunny-toothed grin.
It was like time slowed down. Both of us jumping around together, laughter echoing from both of our lips. Eyes bright and only focused on the other, the music muffled and quiet in the background. The only two people in the room were us, and there was nothing bothering either one of us. In this moment, we were in utopia.
