Chapter 3

After crying away from everyone for a bit I moved to the deck and saw both Skylar and Ryker glaring at the crew.

"What do you mean you can't find him?! If anything happened to my little brother I swear I'll have all of your asses!" Skylar yelled looking as if he was really in panic. Ryker just watched his twin yell at the crew.

"What's going on?" I asked as I rubbed my eyes as they felt very heavy, I hadn't cried since I was told of mother's death months ago. Ryker and Skylar turn towards my voice and seem to relax a little. Skylar even went as far as to hug me when I got close enough.

"Do not scare me like that Raven. Aunty hurt us enough by vanishing with you after your 5th birthday. We don't need you leaving again... it will break my heart. I can't handle it again..." I closed my eyes feeling every word he said making my heart ache weakly. I didn't want to trust anything they said.

"I'm sorry, I just had to get somewhere quiet. Boss told me mother was lost at sea after an attack by another pirate ship when she went with one of her friends to find some sea gems. I haven't been back out since she was lost." I had to make sure they didn't know I overheard them speaking.

Skylar's eyes softened as he watches me before he held me to his tall frame. Ryker didn't seem to believe me until he saw the tears welling back up and sighed.

"You should take him to our room Skylar, I'll bring dinner once I handle those worthless crewmates."

Skylar nod, leading back towards the room I heard them talking about. The room wasn't super big, but it wasn't small either. There was a desk with many peoples sitting on it, I started to wonder if I could find anything about this prophecy they talked about on any of them.

"Ryker may seem like he hates everyone, but he does care about you. I honestly doubt you remember, but when you were 4, he and I went to protect you from bullies. He broke his arm but didn't tell anyone because he didn't want you to get hurt again. The one who told aunty was you, she helped him. He wasn't mad at you, but he was at the bullies." Skylar had a soft smile on his face from the memory. I on the other hand could not remember this at all.

I look down at my hands, they were shaking a little as I tried to take a deep calming breath. "Honestly, I do not remember that or y'all. However, I do want to get to know you both. I was never allowed out to sea when mother was alive because she feared I'd get hurt or someone would kill me."

Skylar was about to say something but stopped when Ryker walked into the room with one of the crewmates holding three plates of food. "Enough talking it's time for dinner."

I felt a little relaxed knowing the conversation was over with. Now I just had to find a way in here when they were both busy to try and figure out what this prophecy is all about. Ryker cleared his throat as he held a plate to me. I accepted it with a small smile.

"Thank you, Ryker." I said watching him. He seems to be watching me also as he took in what I said.

"You need to become sterner or everyone will keep walking all over you. You haven't changed at all." Ryker step over to the desk sitting down behind it as he swooshed away the crew man.

"Skylar, I have been wondering since boss said it. What is an Adaro's?" I saw them both tense at the words I said. My mind ran a mile a minute trying to figure out what it was but came up with nothing. They had to know what it was since boss called them it, right?

Ryker sighed as he took a sip of his rum, "To the humans, adaro are the evil side of a spirit that has lost its good side, aunga. But we are both parts of a spirit that is called merman. We are just called the adaro because we choose to be pirates instead of British generals like some wanted."

I frown trying to wrap my head around what he was saying, "So, you are mermen and liked on land before?"

Skylar look at Ryker before sighing, "I'll say this once, anyone who chooses to go to sea, are one with it. Every pirate you know is something that came from water. Your mother and you, y'all are Nix, or nixes as some say. However, you carry something special about y'all. So, humans fear y'all. She took you to where there were no humans, so they could not harm you. Keep you away from the ocean in case one found its way to you. She did everything to protect you and we love her for that, but she also stole you from us."

I could see the pain in his eyes as he spoke. He was glad mother keep me safe but also angry with her for taking me away, so I was not raised with my siblings.

Something inside me was saying not to believe everything they said so I was taking it all in and trying to figure out what was a lie and what was real. It isn't easy with how Skylar looked as if he believed every word he said was true.

"What is a nix?" I asked picking up my food to eat. Ryker smile a little as he watched us.

"Nix are male shapeshifting water spirits, nixe is what your mother would be called since she is female. The rumor is some can bear children with humans, but no one really knows if its true." He moves to finish eating before getting up and walked towards me. He moved his hand towards my face, I forced myself not to move as his hand came to my cheek then move towards my ear. His fingers slowly rub my ear gently, "The slit of your ear is proof of you being a male nix."

I look into Ryker's eyes as he keeps feeling my ear, I couldn't bring myself to push him away. Why was my heart pounding in my chest for? Was it fear? I couldn't explain why I felt like this or why my hands move to touch his wrist. He seems shocked for a second before he pulls his hand away and move to the desk. His back was to me, but I could see he was tensed.

What was going through his mind? I wish I knew what they both were thinking. Skylar look at his twin before standing up, "Raven, can you go for a bit? Ryker and I need to speak in private."

He wasn't really asking more of telling but I nodded and got up anyway to leave.

"I'll be heading to bed, itis past dark out now." I moved to close the door as I left out of the room. I knewthey would not speak until they thought I was gone so instead of stickingaround to try and listen more I left for my small bed, so I could rest. Its notevery day you found out you're not human and that everyone you knew is somethingthat isn't supposed to be real.
