The Begining

The night wind was calm, a cool breeze brings many leaves with it, stripping the trees of their colorful fronds. Beside me walks my best friend and most trusted companion, Wirt Willows. The silence was broken only by the sounds of joyful children and our shoes clicking on the damp pavement. My hands which were clasped together gently rested against my hoop skirt as I walked. It was a late Friday night and one of the first football games of the season, although it seemed slightly strange to me to have a football game on Halloween night.

Wirt had convinced me to go with him just to sit there for hours waiting for it to be over, all while he watched Sara and payed me no mindSara.. she was a kind person and never did anything unreasonable but something about her just didn't feel right. I had difficulties spending time with people my age, mostly because everyone I met was the same, obsessed with technology and talking about nothing but just that. To be honest it always made me a little sick. I suppose that's why I like Wirt so much, he's... different.

I hear the upbeat music of the marching band grow louder, I nearly missed it as I was engrossed in my thoughts. I say nothing but watch closely as Wirt leans up against the fence, tape in hand. I had just now noticed he had left the house with it. A sweet childish voice breaks me from my thoughts.

"Goodbye! Thank you, Old Lady Daniels!"

"Goodbye Gregory, and please don't call me old lady."

I turn to see the little boy, his green jumper and white shirt slightly dirty, but from what?

"Yes sir, young man!" He happily waves goodbye.

I giggle at his silliness, Greg made everything a little happier just by being around, well except for Wirt but besides Sara I'm the only one who can really get a laugh or a smile out of him.

"Hey Wirt, whatcha doin'?" The boy pries.

"Nothing." Wirt's tone seems off and hollow.

"I was helping Old Lady Daniels rake some leaves in exchange for candy!" Reaching into his bag he proudly presents his earnings to Wirt and I. I can't help but laugh, only to receive a fake pout from Greg.

"What's so funny?" I bend down to his height and lean forward a little to ruffle up the hair sticking out from under his teapot.

"Greg, sweetie, it's Halloween. Candy is free."

The small boy puts his hands on his hips and frowns.

"Old Lady Daniels says nothing in this world is free."

"Well I suppose that's true, isn't it Wirt?" I stand tall only to see Wirt frown at Greg and turn back to the fence. A soft sigh escapes my lips, why did I let him talk me into this.

Because you care for him, that's why.

Greg then speaks up again.

"I also got this rock, hey Wirt wanna learn some rock facts."

Again Greg is responded to only with silence, I can't help but scowl at his behavior towards his brother.

"So Greg, what are you supposed to be?" He smiles then points to the spout of the teapot.

"I'm an elephant. What about you Y/N? What ever you are, you look very pretty. Don't you think Y/N is pretty Wirt?"

At this Wirt immediately turns to look at his brother, then at me, and back at his brother. His face covered in a shade of bright red.

"She's beautiful, Greg."

He turns away just as quickly as he had to look at us, leaving me a red mess. Greg then puts away his rock and tugs on Wirt's cape.
