Through the dark they ran, an eerie glow given by the moon. A knot was twisted up in Wirt's stomach, as he could only force his feet to go so fast. Why? Why was he like this? If it were anyone other than him, he thought, it would be easy. Everyone around him was so sure and confident, and any attempt by himself to replicate their good fortune was for naught. His thoughts were a constant, and somewhat haywire, sorting machine.
Always processing and analyzing way more than it should be. He tends to blurt out insulting or inappropriate things because he's not good at editing his thoughts. And the more he tries to backpedal, the deeper he digs his hole. This is especially awkward for a young man his age when trying to talk to girls. That being said... when he intended to give Sara the tape of his confusing jumble of thoughts it was to save him some embarrassment. He never wanted to spend his night in a desperate effort to retrieve it.
And yet that's just where he was, and not only did he manage to do it to himself but he dragged both his brother and his best friend into it. How wonderfully, amazingly, awful.
"C'mon, The Eternal Garden Cemetery is this way." Y/n's voice said, cutting into Wirt's thoughts like a hot knife through butter. He took notice that she looked not at the street signs but at the sidewalk.
Curious, as her statement had provoked an even more complicated process within him, he asked; "How do you know the exact way to the cemetery?"
She smiled, and answered him with; "There's a lot of things you don't know about me." She then winked, grabbed Greg's hand, (because he would have crossed the street had she not), and continued on her way. Wirt gaped at her as she walked away, his face bright crimson from embarrassment.
Man did she confuse him.
At the end of the street they came upon a large iron gate, with the expected greenery growing around the sides of it's hinges and large emboldened font displaying 'Eternal Garden'. The gate, already having been opened, proved that the group including Sara had been there just moments before.
"Well, we know they're close. Sara shouldn't be too difficult to find." Y/n hummed.
Their walk only lasted a moment more, when Greg heard a frog. The little boy gasped with excitement and told his brother just how excited he was that they would finally have their frog hunt.
"It never was a-
"Look! A witches gathering!" The little boy shouted, pulling his hand from Y/n's grasp to point toward them.
Bewildered that he knew such a term, and wondering why he said it, she did look. Only to find Sara, Jason, and a few other kids she hardly recognized from school.
"Come on!" Wirt grabbed her hand, pulling her behind the tombstones. He watched them for half a second then turned and rested his back on the plot.
"What am I gonna do?"
"I'll pretend to be a dead elephant and distract them while you get the tape." Greg suggested, happily.
"No." Y/n responded, stifling laughter thinking about it.
"Please just stay here." Wirt said.
But, thinking was getting us nowhere. And Wirt disliked the interaction between Sara and Funderberker. So much so that Y/n could hear him growling at it from a distance. And with that Wirt threw caution to the wind and told Greg to put his elephant plan into action.
"Okay!"
Greg ran off, taking the teapot from his head and did his best to distract the group. Y/n was using all her will power not to laugh, but he looked like a hyped up two year old, noises and all. It was both cute and hilarious and she just couldn't handle it.
