To retrieve a Tape

Running across the damp sidewalk kicked up water dampening the back of my skirt and my heels. The streetlights guided our way back to the football field where we were once again met by Kathleen, Rhondi and Sheryl. Wirt stopped abruptly when he saw them step down from the bleachers. Heaving out a tired breath he asked where the tape was.

"We put it in Sara's jacket for you." Kathleen answers.

Wirt's already panicked expression shifted into maximum overdrive when he cried out. Noticing his frustration Kathleen explains where Sara is, helping our hunt for the tape.

"You better hurry, she's changing in the track shack."

And with that Wirt ran off, leaving me rather frustrated.

He goes through all that trouble to get the courage to give it to her, ends up not doing so and wants it back?!  He really needs to make up his mind.

I take a deep breath and shake my shoulders, relieving my stress.

It's not his fault, you should be happy to help him, he's your best friend after all.

"Wirt, there it is! The jacket!"

Wirt began to frantically search the pockets when Jimmy scolded us for presumably spying on Sara. After Sara came out she grabbed her bike and rode straight down 28th ave, I knew exactly where she was headed.

I grabbed Wirt's hand and started running, there was no way in hell I was going home tonight knowing Wirt didn't have that tape. It was bad enough that she was all he talked about anymore, I didn't need him and Sara to get together only to leave me behind. I've had far too many "friends" do that to me and I wasn't going to lose Wirt too.

"Come on Wirt, she's headed straight for Gabe's house!"

I heard music blaring from the house as we ran, getting closer to that dreaded tape.

"There she goes, let's get her!"

Greg's look becomes serious, he claps his hand into his fist and says in the most menacing tone he can muster, "Yeah, let's get her."

It took everything to not laugh at that and how confused Wirt looked by his statement.

"No, Greg. We're not gonna get her like that." I snorted.

"Then...What are we doing?" He asks Wirt.

"We're just gonna get the tape back."

"Oh, yeah."

"Let's go in after her then." I suggested.

Wirt only sighs, he thinks he's not really liked by most of the class so this was no surprise to me. Everyone likes him, but it puts him down when they make jokes at his expense. Sometimes, they need to tone it down. They don't mean to but they really bring down his self esteem.

"I can't. I wasn't invited to this party."

The tone in his voice would let anyone know that he wishes he had been. Of course I hadn't been invited either, it seems that everyone forgets I exist, then after it happened people in class will talk about it to me like I was there, assuming I had been. Oh well. I'll always have Wirt. It was probably better I wasn't there. I got very claustrophobic around large crowds in smaller spaces and this house was definitely not big enough for all these people.

Greg tells his brother that he'll go in, only to be told he wasn't invited either.

But it had absolutely no effect on him, as the little boy walked straight inside, no hesitation. Alrighty then.  Wirt and I followed, but watched him from the window instead of actually going inside. Greg looked as if he was explaining something to our classmates.
