Chapter Twenty Six

"Did you find anything?"

"No. Everything is wipped out"

"Jr went to go get the van, our things are missing, your bow is gone"

"Son of a bitch!" I yelled

Bennett just laughed at me. I looked at him with the meanest look I could give, he just smiled "we will get it back"

"We better" I said walking to the van, putting my gun in its holster

"We can find you a new one?" Bennett offered catching up to me

"I like that one" I said as Bennett grabbed my hand

"Then if we dont find it, we can find you a new weapon"

"I guess" I really liked that bow

We finally came up to the van were we all meet up after searching. Ever went with Jr and Conner, Rabbit stayed in the van with food and water.

"I think they went on foot" I said after we all meet back up

"What makes you think that?" Jr asked

"They took everything out the van, but didnt take the van. On the ground is leaves, if they drove the leaves would have moved and you would nearly see two streaks from the tires" I said looking around on the ground

"Why wouldn't they drive? With all those people?" Conner asked mostly to himself

"Maybe they dont know how to drive" Bennett added

"Or they like traveling on feet because they can get on higher ground and go through the woods" Jr said

"That's what I think. They came across us because they probably saw us out in the middle of the streets. Going through the woods helps from keeping out of sight" I explained my theory

"They were dirty" Conner said

"Then the woods we go" Bennett said going to the back of the van

"We need to look for smoke or any of the dead" I said jumping in the passenger seat

"Why smoke? And why the dead? Of course they are going to be around" Jr asked

"Smoke, cause they could have started a fire over night. And the dead cause they could have killed them, so when we come across one that's on the ground, see if the blood is fresh. Also look for any more that could lead us towards them" I said as we took off

"Damn" Conner mumbled

"Damn" Ever mumbled after Conner

"Ever!" We all yelled as she laughed

"Watch your language young lady" Bennett said

"Sowy benny" Ever said

"Who could be mad at that face?" Conner said driving off

"We have been driving for hours" Jr complained

"Do you want to walk instead?" Conner asked

"No" Jr said quietly to himself

"That's what I thought"

"Look! Over there!" I said as I pointed to a sign

Conner stopped the van in the middle of the road to look at the sign. Bennett and Jr came up closer to see what it had said.

"What does it say?" I asked, not really embarrassed anymore since everyone knew I couldn't read

"Randoff" Bennett said reading it

"Randoff? What is that?" I asked

"I dont know" Bennett asked

I got out of the van to see if the liquid on the sign was still wet. Everyone got out and looked around the area we were. I touched the liquid, that I found out was red mud, was still wet.

I looked down below me, but the thing was, I was not near any red mud. I looked into the woods, but I also didnt see any mud.

"Is there any wet mud around you!" I called out to them only to get 'no'

"It is written in mud, and it's still wet so we must be getting closer" I said walking up to the van

"But there is not mud around just, dirt" Bennett said

"I know, so that must mean if she wrote this, where ever they are, there has to be mud" I said

"And we have to find out what Randoff means" Conner added

"Could be a store" Jr suggested

"I've never heard of a store called Randoff" I said

"Could be a street name" Conner said

"Sounds like a street name. I'll get the map, where is it?" Bennett asked me

"Its in my bag"

Bennett came back with the map and put it on the hood of the van. We first looked for where we were, then any streets or store names, named Randoff.

"Here. Randoff High School" Jr pointed to

"Are we still in North Carolina?" I asked

"We have been driving for a while, we may be in Virginia or South Carolina. I dont know which way I have been driving" Conner told me

"It will be getting dark soon. Let's drive a little more and then camp out in the van for the night" Bennett said folding the map

"Sounds good to me. It said Randoff was only a few miles away so we are getting close" Conner said

"I'll go check on dad" Jr said going to the back of the van, Conner following

I was about to go to but Bennett pulled me back. He held both of my hands looking down.

"What is it?" I asked

"What if this isnt her. What if it's someone else looking for their family"

"Its not. Its Laura" I said

"You dont know that"

"I do" I said looking him in his eyes

"My family left me, Laura didnt. I'm not going to give up on finding your family" I said

"Why dont you want to look for them?" He asked

"Because they left me with a reason, and I dont want to know that reason" I told him

"You have to face your fears sometimes"

"I do everyday. But that isnt a fear" I said walking to check on Maddie

"How is he?" Bennett asked

"He doenst seem to have a fever. But he needs to wake up, he is hydrated" Jr said

"How do you know?" I asked

"Mom taught me some things"

I looked over to see Ever sleeping. Rabbit was awake sniffing the ground, I got he had to use the bathroom.

"Did you happen to grab a last and food?" I asked

"Yeah, in that big box" Conner said grabbing a leash

I put the leash on the dog and sat it on the ground. Conner poured some dog food in a bowl for Rabbit. I took the dog to go do its business then put her back in the van.

"Ready to go?" Conner asked

"Ready" we all said

Bennett go in the passenger seat since he could read a map. He held it in his hands with a compass telling Conner were to go. Bennett helped me understand how to read a map better as we drove.

And on the road we went
