After a few weeks they dismissed me from the hospital and I was immediately transported to the FBI agency in D.C.
They said I needed to go there to get my new identity.
I haven't been this nervous since my first time on stage. I thought I'd hurl all over Clark.
The detectives handed me off to some special agents and said that Clark and I would be separated when we were placed in hiding. They figured it would be easier for us to be noticed.
When Clark argued about me being 17, they said they would arrange me to stay with a family that helped with children that need to be hidden.
Flashbacks of my earlier years made my stomach pinch. I hated being "placed" with a family, but I quickly reminded myself that this was different.
The family would know all about me and there was nothing to fear as long as I didn't talk about my old life. I'll be fine.
But it isn't like that would be a problem. Why would I want everyone to know I'm Lea McKenzie? I'm just curious to know how they think they can transform me into some normal person.
When they told me, my curiosity died with the cat.
"You're sending me where?" I shriek.
"We're sending you to Texas. Marble Falls, Texas to be exact." The leader of the group of agents sitting around the table speaks.
I laugh hysterically. "You're kidding me right? I can't be moved to Texas. It's...it's...it's Texas for Christ sake!"
"We have to move you to a place you'd least likely to be seen. A pop singer wouldn't be in a country music area. You need to blend without any issues." The leader folds his arms.
I pout and fold my arms. "So, I'm supposed to hang with a bunch of country bumpkins until you find this guy you have no clue about?"
"Think of it as a vacation from show biz." He smirks.
I'm tempted to slap the silly grin off of his face, but I remind myself that this is what I wanted. A break from show biz. I take a deep breath.
"Well, where is Clark going?"
"We can't tell you that for both of your safety. Now, if we're done here, the makeover people will be giving you your new look." He states sternly, hinting he was done talking to me.
I grunt in reply. He and his partners left together like a flock of birds going south for the winter. I guess I could've at least remembered his name.
Minutes later, an Asian lady comes for me and escorts me into an elevator.
Everything in the building I've seen so far is plain except for photos of old people. Some tinged with age other's look brand spanking new.
The music in the elevator, that's meant to soothe passengers, only ticks me off more.
I miss my iPod already. First world problems.
"Um, Ms. McKenzie?" The Asian woman stutters.
I thought the FBI is supposed to be intimidating not intimidated.
"Yes?"
"Well, I was wondering...well, my daughter loves you and..."
Catching onto her request, I ask for a pen and sign some random item she hands me.
"Thank you so much." She smiles.
I smile back, feeling a bit annoyed and follow her out the open elevator doors.
