Katie's POV
It was hard to believe that in only a span of 4 days, Annie had nearly died twice. First the lake, then the snake; I guess she wasn't having such good luck.
There was also a part of me that found this slightly weird, especially after what Annie told me.
I was sitting on the bed attempting to text my mom, since the service here was crappy and went in and out, and if you didn't catch it at the right time, nothing would send. While I was waiting for my message to send, Annie started waking up.
"Morning, sleepy head. For once you're up early," I said with a slight laugh.
Annie made a face at me as she sat up and raked her hand through her messy morning hair. "Ha ha, very funny. I just couldn't sleep well, I fell asleep around 6."
"It's 7:30 right now," I said as I glanced down at my phone.
Annie's eyes widened. "I only got an hour and a half of sleep? Ugh."
"Why couldn't you sleep?" I asked.
Annie sighed. "You'll probably think I'm crazy."
I got off my bed and sat on Annie's facing her. "Try me."
"Okay..." Annie took a deep breath. "When I was in the lake and I was being called back, I felt something grab my paddle and pulled me down with it. Of course I thought it would be some typical lake creature, but when I was underwater, I saw something..."
"What did you see, Annie?" I inched closer.
"I know it sounds crazy, but I saw what looked like a mermaid. But maybe I was just so scared that I imagined it; stuff like that happened to me when I was little," Annie finished.
"Maybe you did actually see one," I thought aloud.
"You know I don't believe in the supernatural, Kate. I'm sure it was just my mind, forget everything I said," Annie said before getting out of bed. "I'm going to shower."
As Annie grabbed her things and headed out of the room, I kept thinking about what she said. Maybe she really did see a mermaid or a siren or something, and there being supernatural creatures around here could explain the whole glass breaking incident a couple days ago. Although I think I may have been right about it, Hayden seemed genuinely convinced that it was not a phone app, and maybe he's right; if it was a sound, wouldn't we all have heard it anyway?
Something fishy is going on, and I intend on finding out what it is.

Annie's POV
After I had told Katie about what I thought I saw in the lake, I started doubting myself. I remembered when I was little that in scary situations I would imagine things sometimes that weren't real, so I figured I had done the same thing at the lake.
Besides, seeing a mermaid in a lake in the middle of the woods? I don't even believe in the supernatural, so it's completely unlikely.
Once I got out of the shower I walked into the kitchen to see Jake was there.
"Oh, good morning Annie, I didn't expect you to be up so early," Jake said when he noticed me.
"Yeah, I didn't either," I laughed as I leaned against the half wall. "Whatcha making?"
"Just some breakfast for myself, since no one else was awake," he replied.
"That's nice," I said.
"Do you want to try it? Let me know if it's any good?" he asked as he took a spoonful of scrambled eggs he was making.
"Okay," I walked over and was going to take the spoon from his hand, but he insisted and put the spoon in my mouth himself.
