"ALBERT!" I yell walking into the newsboys lodging house. It was 11:00 at night and every newsie was getting ready to sleep. Everyone looks at me, and then Albert. I waited for him while leaning on the doorway. I stood with my arms and legs crossed with my eyebrows raised.
"Albert you better go. That's the 'I'm waiting' look." Race whispers to Albert as he takes the suspenders off his shoulders. Damn straight it's my 'I'm waiting' look. Albert puts his hat back on and finally walks over to me. I lead him downstairs to the entrance of the lodging house so no one could hear us.
"What happened?" Albert ask impatient while crossing his arms.
"Aw. Are you tired?" I pout. "Well suck it up cause i'm pissed." I say as my pout turns into a 'I'm not in a good mood look'. He let's out a sigh as his impatient look goes away.
"What did I do?" He ask uncrossing his arms and pointing to himself.
"You lied to me." I growl crossing my arms. A confused look grows on Albert's face.
"What did I say?"
"You said we don't know a Katie when clearly we do. How come i never found out Race had a girlfriend before me? I've been living with you guys for 5 years." I say raising my voice.
"What Katie are you talkin about?" Albert ask looking me up and down.
"Katie Walter. Ring a bell?" I say with an unhappy tone. I was really upset.
"Katie Walter? How did you find out about her? They dated years ago." Albert laughs.
"Because dummy." I say snatching the hat off his head and smacking him with it. "I was told that I needed to be careful because this so called 'Katie Walter' Is comin for me if she finds out I belong to Race."
"Relax, what's the worse she can do, pull your hair?" Albert ask taking his hat back. "A rich spoiled New York girl has never stopped you before." He says as he started making his way up the stairs.
"Um i don't know maybe convince Race to get back together with her?" I yell making Albert stop and turn his attention back to me. He let's out a tired sigh and walks down to me.
"Look Ken. Race hates this girl, alright? Trust me, she is a crazy person. But he loves you. And you's is really meant for each other. Don't let this nut job ruin ya happiness." He says putting a hand on my shoulder. He's got a point. Race is probably tired of all the worryin i'm doin and wants me to calm myself and focus on our relationship.
"Ya gotta point Albert." I sigh. He smiles and starts walking up stairs again.
"Wait!" I say making him stop and turn to me. "Do you think Race wants me to stop bein so uptight?" I ask unsure. I really do want to know.
"All I know is that he fell in love with the most fearless, laid-back, and charming girl in New York. Instead of worryin you should be enjoyin the time you have with Race. I know that's what I would want if I dated you." He shrugs as he walks back up stairs. That last sentence threw me off guard. 'That's what I would want if I dated you'? What's that supposed to mean? But besides that I really need to take his advice. What if Race is sick of all these trust issues i'm havin right now? What if he thinks I don't trust him at all? All of a sudden Race comes down the stairs.
"What happened?" He ask stepping off the last step and holding on to the end of the railing.
"Nothing. I just need to learn how to be laid back Kenny again. You made me lose my care freeness." I joke as smile grows on my face.
"Care freeness? Freeness ain't a word dummy." Race laughs. I push his shoulder as I laugh with him.
"You sure you don't wanna talk about anything?" Race ask grabbing my hands. I think about it for a second. Do I wanna ask him about this? Do I wanna start something or do I want to take Albert's advice and enjoy the time I have with Race.
"...I'm sure." I nod.
I have a better plan. I need to see this Katie Walter girl myself. We head upstairs and go to bed. I didn't sleep at all that night. I waited for sunrise and I blasted outta the lodging house. Quietly though. I walk to the paper stand and look for the Delancy's. They were behind the paper stand stacking the bunches of newspapers. I slam my hand on the stack of papes Morris was fixing and they both looked up at me.
"What do you want?" Morris scolds.
"Hey I heard you and Race are still a thing." Oscar laughs.
"Why is that funny to you?" I furrow my eyebrows.
"Cause he cheated one you." Oscar says in a duh tone. Not the expression I would use asshole.
"Speaking of, do you know where I can find this... Katie Walter?" I ask. Oscar and Morris look at each other and start laughing.
"Girls from Queens... if your looking." Morris tilts his head.
"I am actually." I say with a forced smile. "Do me a favor and not be rats for once in your lives. Please don't tell anyone where I am." I plead with a desperate look folding my hands.
"Yea yea whatever. Not like we care about your safety." Oscar rolls his eyes.
"Mm yea fuck you Oscar." I say walking away. Queen here I come.
