I wake up to the beeping sound all these things that make sure I'm alive. I forgot what they are called but thankfully I have an excuse. I probably hit my head during piloting the plane into the ice.
I have to blink a few times before my eyes get used to the bright lights. When I finally get used to them I see Bucky half sitting half lying in an uncomfortable chair. His head rests in his right palm. I must say, he looks very peaceful like this.
I try to sit up but pain attacks my torso. I gasp at the sudden pain and a voice in my head laughs at me. It is my mother's voice. "Dachtest du wirklich mein Tod wäre mein Ende? Ach nein, dumme, kleine Fee, ich werde für immer hier sein. In deinem Kopf." Did you really think my death would be my end? Oh no, stupid little fairy, I will forever be here. In your head.
I shake my head in a desperate attempt to get rid of these thoughts. Fee was what my brother always called me. He said that was the only way a girl will fly. I try to convince myself that it is the tiredness playing tricks on my mind.
I guess my gasp was louder than I thought because Bucky started stirring in his sleep. I hold my breath and hope that he goes back to sleep. He does and so do I. My dreamless slumber is interrupted by a nurse walking in and asking Bucky to leave while she changes my bandages.
"Of course, Mr. Stark wants to do some tests anyways." His answer alarmed me. "What tests? Why? What's wrong?" Everybody could hear how agitated I was. He smiles and responds. "Nothing's wrong, doll. Well, not directly. The thing is Stark thinks I'm some sort of super-soldier. He thinks Hydra stole some of Steve's blood and copied the serum." "Oh, alright. That sounds new. Umm, how do I say this? You might want to shave before you go there."
The nurse, whom I look at for the first time and recognise as Sanaa lets out a little laugh while Bucky caresses his chin and left cheek with his left hand. It doesn't make much sense because he can't feel it, but when does James Buchanan Barnes ever make sense?
He quickly runs over to me and pecks my lips. It tickles a bit but I could get used to it. I watch how he walks out the door after winking in my direction.
I rub my face with my hands. It helps to get rid of the tiredness. "How long was I out?" It's a cliché thing to ask but I need information. Sanaa looks at her watch and answeres. "Two days, seven hours and twenty eight minutes. He hasn't left since he heard that you and Captain Rogers survived that horrible accident. You have two broken ribs, a broken leg, broken twice, severe cuts and bruising and a light head trauma. But we believe you'll make a full recovery, your toes are already fine. Oh and, the war ended while you were asleep."
That is a lot of information. I have to digest it. Sanaa starts to unwrap the bandages surrounding the gips on my leg. Moving it does hurt a little but it's nothing compared to what I felt two days ago. It's actually quite relaxing.
Sanaa breaks the silence by asking me: "How long have you and Bucky been together?" "We are not together. We went on one official date and a mission date in almost two years" "Yet you behave like a freshly married couple." Her voice was filled with mockery. "I forgot to ask, how is it with you and Falsworth?" I raised an eyebrow. "Nothing, some say he sas a sweetheart back home. I don't know what to belive anymore."
She was sad about someone she just met three days ago. "Well, he didn't tell me anything about her. I know him for almost five years. He would have mentioned it. Whoever you heard it from must have been mistaken."
Now she is ready with my bandages and starts brushing my hair. I decided not to talk so I can enjoy every second of it. That is one of perks of being hospitalised. Although I don't want to try the food.
"Sanaa?" "Hmmm?" "Where am I? You never told me." "Oh, sorry. We're in New York. Harlem I think. You have to rest, try to sleep. I'll be back as soon as I can." And with that I was on my own again but it didn't take me too long to fall asleep. Maybe when I wake up Bucky will be back. But we're in New York. His family is here, he has other things to do.
I dream about the date we couldn't go on. Everything was so nice. We were in a nice club not a tavern like last time. There were no drunk men. Steve and Peggy were there too. It was hilarious. He kept stepping on her feet. Maybe it will happen after my leg heals but for now it's only a dream.
