So, it was a Saturday night and I was shopping for a new couch. Last year, I decided to make a major change in my life, so I ended my going nowhere relationship, gave up my high stress, high paying engineering job, and took a program director job in Houston for a local non-profit that helps needy families. It was late March when I sold off all my stuff (and some of my ex's stuff) bought a plane ticket and got a hotel room. I moved from Chicago to Houston with just my clothes, a couple of boxes of mementos, and my belief that this change was for the best.
When I first got to Houston I lived in a hotel for almost a month before I found a fully furnished apartment. This temporary home was perfect because I could just move in with my stuff and focus on getting use to my new hometown and new job.
It also gave me some time to get more into my passion, which was photography. I loved taking pictures of buildings and the outdoors. Compared to Chicago, Houston has great weather year-round, so it gave me a lot of time to explore and capture the Houston I was growing to love.

My job was also helping me find my happiness again. I spent most of my time trying to get rich people and huge corporations to give money to help families in transition, with a focus on families with children. We had a network of non-profits throughout Houston who were able to not worry about fundraising and just do the work of helping these families find their new normal. Even though I wasn't on the front lines I felt like I was doing great work. I wasn't making anywhere near the amount of money I made in Chicago, but this job gave me something that was worth a lot more: peace.
Once I knew that I would be in the area for a while I decided it was time for me to start to put down some roots. At work I met Samuel, who volunteered with one of our feeder organizations and who was also a realtor. Samuel was that friend that everyone needed. He was fashionable, smart, and could sing his ass off. I thought he should try to become a fulltime singer, but his true love was the law. He was a junior Partner at this law firm and flipped houses during his spare time. He was a great person to have in my corner.
