Chapter 3 - Who are you? - Samuel
I loved getting into the office early because it allows me to mentally prepare for the day ahead and gives me these quiet moments to think about how blessed I am. It has become a part of my morning ritual to get in before the office or the city starts bustling with life and just stand at the window and look at the city below come to life. During the early hours, you can forget that Houston is a major metropolitan city that rivals any of the great cities around the world. Right now, the city feels like its resting because it has a hard day ahead of it. As the sun begins to rise you start to see the head lights from the cars, then the buildings start to light up as people arrive in their offices, and lastly the sun's rays give light to the darkness that man once illuminated. Houston is just a great city and I love it.
But at this early time there is very little movement, very little light, and the active city is still asleep. The firm is quiet and empty. I'm sitting in my chair, in my dark office, facing the windows and just taking in all my blessings. I am blessed that I have experience assisting clients with worldwide portfolio management, counseling, exploitation and enforcement, primarily relating to trademarks, trade dress and branding. I am blessed that I am a Junior Partner and the best intellectual property lawyer at my firm. I am blessed that my flipping business is going well and that my boy Trey listened to me and went with the condo. I'm blessed my family is happy and healthy. I am blessed that I can honestly say that I am happy.
I am also blessed that the newest Partner at the firm, Tyrell Johnson Wright, is on his knees sucking the soul out of my dick. Ty has been my guy since our first year at the University of Houston Law Center. We met in our Contracts class where he saved me from embarrassing myself because I failed to absorb the finer points of Ray v. Eurice & Bros. That semester we spent our time helping each other learn contract formation, contract interpretation, the performance of contractual obligations, defenses to breaches of contract, and remedies. When we weren't cramming the law into our heads, we spent our time building a real friendship.
Tyrell
I can honestly say he was my best friend during law school. We hung out, took care of each other, and just made each other happy. He is the smartest guy I have ever met, and I worked hard to be half the law student he was. He was Editor-In-Chief of the Law Review and I was the Managing Editor. He graduated top of our class and I was number 2. I was his biggest cheerleader and he was mine. After law school we cried because we were going in two different directions. It was no surprise that he went to DC and clerked at the Supreme Court because he was just that great. I started my career in one of the top law firms in the country. In the beginning we tried to call and text often. We also visited each other a couple of times. But as you can imagine, our busy lives took over and the calls and texts became fewer and farther between. What started as days, morphed into months, turned into years and it seemed like at some point both of us no longer tried.
