What is really funny is that Sam thinks he remembers the first time he met me but he doesn't. I allow him to tell that story because the real story is too much for me to explain. For him, the first time we met was in our Contracts class in law school. As he tells it, he was floundering with his answer and I swooped in to save him. He thanked me and we have been friends ever since.

The truth is that I have lusted after him since the first day of law school. He just never noticed me. Then I wanted to get to know him so I stood up for him that second week of school. After class he came up to me:

"Hey brother, thanks for the assist. I guess it didn't read that case so well. I had no idea what he was talking about." He grabbed my shoulder.

I was stunned that he touched me but I tried to play it cool. "No worries man, I know how it is some time."

He reached out his hand and said, "I'm Sam Chappelle and you are?"

He reached out his hand and said, "I'm Sam Chappelle and you are?"

Sam

"Oh, my bad, I'm Tyrell Wright. You can call me Ty."

"Nice to meet you Ty. Well, there are many of us here so maybe we can help each other be more prepared for class."

"Well, I'm always prepared but I can help a brother out."

"Oh snap! I like you. Well, we can help each other out."

"I'm cool with that."

"Well, where are you headed now?"

"Actually I was thinking about lunch. Just hadn't decided on a place to go."

"Let's walk over to Frenchy's. It's cheap good food."

"More like inexpensive good food. Cheap is never good."

"Are you just going to keep carrying me?"

"You told me to keep you prepared."

He threw his hand over my shoulders and started pulling me out the door. "True, true."

And we walked out the door and from that day forward we were inseparable. My lust transformed in love of my best friend. I valued that more than anything. Growing up in California I can say that no one knew the real me. Sam didn't know all of my secrets but he knew a lot of them. We just enjoyed each other company and we had each other's back. He doesn't know that I know but he was the person that ensured that I got EIC of Law Review and mostly at his own expense. He would always included me in his plans and helped me get out and meet people.

If you saw me then Sam wasn't too far away and vice-versa. One weekend when we were supposed to be studying, this fool had me drive him all the way to Austin just so we can go hear this very forgettable house band. Or that one time when he was watching that Boyz II Men video and decided we should go see the white sands in New Mexico. I was the person that ensured we graduated from law school; he was the person that ensured that we actually enjoyed law school.
