It was love at first sight. I was totally unsuspecting totally unaware. It was a scary new sensation but I liked it, welcomed it. As soon as I laid eyes on her I knew my life was changed. For the better? I'm still not sure. It was 6th grade I was eleven. It was a recess on a cool day in November. Our recess was on a field we were not allowed to stand around or sit we either had to walk or play a game. I didn't mind I was tall for my age athletic, generally popular so I usually had many friends to walk with. On that day I was walking with my best friend trey johnson. A small circle began to form in the middle of the field, we knew what that met, a fight. We decided to walk over and sure enough, as soon as we got in earshot we heard the fighting. Two boys stood in the middle of the circle. One was a short boy named Charlie. He looked about 7 with his curly hair and baby face. He was definitely the instigator here I couldn't tell why someone as small as him was always starting things, maybe he had something to prove. The other boy was a tall boy named Brian he was a football player and was definitely built like one. I was surprised because I was his friend and knew him to be nice and quiet. Now he was red in the face from yelling. It was very comical but I stifled my laughter. I don't know what it is about fights but everyone has the desire to watch and do nothing. It's like a secret bloodlust looking back I now think it is scary and if I saw it happening now I would step in. no one was afraid to step in here, they simply didn't want to. Neither did I so I stood and watched with my stifled laughs. Just as Charlie stepped forward to take the first swing I saw her bolting towards them. She barreled in between them her arms lifted like a bird I guess it was a blocking wall. She was short as Charlie. Her hair was long down to her hips only the bottom was curled long loose pretty blonde ringlets. She had large dark green eyes and dark eyebrows. She had a small straight nose and full lips. She was skinny and wore a very oversized sweatshirt that passed her knees with jeans and black Adidas. I will never forget this mental picture even now it is clear as day. My mouth fell open and I could feel my heart beating in my head and fingertips. I gained tunnel vision only seeing her. Everything was slow motion her running. Her blocking. Her getting hit in the face by Charlie's fist, and her falling in a heap to the ground. I shrieked a noise I had never heard myself make and clamped my hands over my mouth. My tunnel vision broke by my own scream I quickly looked around to see if anyone heard but no one was looking at me they were all in the midst of cringing themselves. I remembered why I shrieked and turned back to her people were running towards her, for teachers it was chaos. Everyone knew not to hit girls Charlie stood with his mouth open face red as a tomato, while Brian sat on the ground next to her repeating I'm sorry a thousand times over. She did not get up. She was hit straight in her face. Hard. I felt the urge to throw up. I was feeling too much at once and not used to feeling much of anything at all. And there was trey shaking my shoulder." dudeeeee" he exclaimed" what the hell just happened can you believe it? Charlie just hit the damn new chick rose"
I couldn't answer I could barely comprehend what he was saying I only saw her. Did he say her name was rose? He started to pull at my elbow edging me away from the horror. Me and my baffled frozen idiotic self-followed mindlessly. As soon as I came to my senses to go to her is was too late the vision of her crumpled form on the ground had been swallowed by a swarm of people.
