"Whatever then! You fuckin brat!" Rylan shouted at his wife as she continued to distance herself from his rage.

McKellan reentered the room defeated and feeling sorry for himself. He swaggered over while adjusting the blazer of his expensive suit as if he'd made the biggest mistake of his life.

He had.

I can admit that there have been times when I've lost my cool with Ruby Jean. I've blown up on her far less than she has me but when I do, it's not half as hostile as this man here. I'm always quick to apologise soon after and spend the rest of the day begging her for forgiveness.

This guy made himself out to be the biggest asshole in the whole damn universe. He spoke to his wife as if they were on opposing sides of a war instead of addressing her as his ally.

McKellan sat down and as soon as he did, Ruby Jean stood up from her chair and kissed my cheek. "I'm gonna make sure she's okay."

"Take your time." I took her hands and put my lips to her fingers.

I missed her before she even left the table and soon she was quickly making her way out the door.

Please come back? I had to force back a sad face while I sat with this fool.

It was just the two of us now. The "boob" and the asshole.

I didn't really have much to say regarding their affairs. Business or marriage wise. But I couldn't very well watch him this defeated without words of encouragement of some kind. He was slumped over in his chair with his face planted in his palms as he huffed into them.

"You alright over there, McKellan?"

"Be honest with me," he started without lifting his head. "Did I overreact?"

"Uh. What the fuck do you think, man?" I asked nonchalantly. "Overreact? Maybe not. But in public? In front of other people? That was messed up. I don't agree with Mrs. McKellan's decision to withhold that sort of information from you. But you know she meant no harm. And she was only looking out for you."

He leaned back into his seat, raking his fingers through his hair in the process. "You don't understand. I mean, really, you don't. Millie has a long history of lying and keeping things from me. It's kept us apart in the past and she knows how this makes me feel."

"You definitely could have said that to her without the swearing and insults. She's your wife. Not your subordinate. Talk to her like you're equals."

Rylan gave a deep huff. "I guess you're right. I feel like an ass."

"Good. Means you acknowledge that you were wrong and now you can apologise. Maybe even save your marriage."

He scoffed. "She's always threatened to leave me before. Millie just might actually do it this time. I ain't never really talked to her this bad in front of company. I really fucked this one up."

"Big time," I nodded.

"Fuck," he exhaled into the quiet dining room. "I need a drink. Join me at the bar?"

I had to really hold in my groan the entire time  me and McKellan were heading over to the bar. I scanned the perimeter to see if Ruby Jean was anywhere in sight but I guess she and Millie were in the bathroom.

We sat down at the stools with other finely dressed juiceheads. This didn't seem like the type of place to have a bar and seemed even less likely to have beer on tap. But Rylan, apparently, was very familiar with this establishment. He ordered two long neck BudLites in aluminium without even asking if they carried them. A bottle was placed in front of each of us and neither of us wasted a single second to screw the lid off and chug.
