There wasn't much left of the party once me and Grant finally rejoined the rest of the guests. Thankfully, no one missed us much. There was about another hour of dancing, a hundred more photos to be taken, and cake.
Soon, the guests were quickly inching their way towards the exits and before long, it was just friends and family much to their dismay. Everyone was either tipsy, over stuffed with a four course meal, or just all together exhausted after the four hour party.
While staff cleaned up the area and caterers gathered their supplies, Grant and I ushered everyone to a cluster of tables in a corner where we stood together as one to address them.
They each gave us exerted stares and their exasperated attention.
We were both nervous. Not that we expected anything but encouragement and praise from our families. Maybe 'nervous' wasn't quite the appropriate term. 'Anxious', perhaps?
I don't know what the hell to call what we were feeling but standing here in front of about two dozen glaring eyeballs wasn't all that great. Maybe I was feeling guilty for having gotten my freak on while everyone else was partying downstairs.
Either way, after all this time, G and I were officially announcing to the rest of the world that our life together was finally getting started.
"So!" G started with an awkward white man clap. "First things first, Mr. and Mrs. B, congratulations on the many years of marriage. A very healthy and long lasting union are couple goals, for sure, and I aspire to one day be just like you."
"Thank you, Grant," Dad smiled at him.
G took my bare shoulder and tugged me towards him as he continued. "I know it's late and we both appreciate everyone's willingness to spare an extra ten minutes to allow Ruby Jean and I to inform you of the great news. As family and close friends, you should be the first to learn that we are expect—"
"YAAAAASSSSSS!"
The room stood still. All eyes —and I mean all eyes, including those of the staff — went to Honey Augustus as she stood up and flipped the table on its head. My Mother-In-Law looked like a stark raving lunatic, screaming that single word at the top of her lungs.
Grant shielded his embarrassment by covering his face with a tattooed hand and blowing quiet breaths into his palm.
"I'm sorry," she apologised into the now awkwardly silenced banquet hall. "I got a little carried away. Please continue, son." Honey had returned to her seat. The table ignored and still on its head.
"Like I was saying, Ruby Jean and I are expecting a baby by the end of the year."
The group, consisting of my folks, Grant's folks, Isaac and Brisah, River and Dax, and the Phoenixes each offered very mild, though sincere congratulations. Probably because Honey expressed enough enthusiasm for everyone in attendance.
We were bombarded with questions from every which direction. Our Mother's started planning our wedding without even acknowledging us and Isaac, that boob, started collecting his wages.
River and her friend, Brisah, rushed from their seats to swarm me with hugs and kisses. Gordon and Uncle Luke shook Grant's and offered their words of praise.
Once the chaos died down, we were finally able to answer some questions.
"I'm so exited to be an Aunt!" Pearly Ann squealed. "How far along are you?"
